Dejphon Chansiri Announces Full Pay for Sheffield Wednesday Staff and Will Seek Advice Over Wage Deferrals

Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri has placed a “significant” number of non-playing staff on furlough leave with full pay. He’s also turned to the PFA for advice on player wage deferrals. It comes as the club looks to cut costs to cope with the suspension of football.

Dejphon Chansiri Announces New Coronavirus Measures

Non-playing Staff Will Get Full Pay

Senior officials contacted the staff on Monday to inform them of the measures, which are being put in place to safeguard the future of the club.

Wednesday released a statement on their club website: “In the best interests of all staff and to help safeguard the future of the club, a significant number of employees are being furloughed as part of the government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.

“Remaining staff are working from home, with the main stadium and training ground locked down.

“The job retention scheme guarantees 80% of regular remuneration up to £2,500 per month but SWFC chairman Dejphon Chansiri has pledged all furloughed members of staff will continue to receive full salary.

“The landscape will be reviewed at the end of April as we digest fresh information on an almost daily basis in this fast-paced environment.”

Seeking Advice on Player Wage Deferrals

Wednesday have contacted the Professional Footballer’s Association to seek advice on player wage deferrals, as the lack of football has left all clubs with no matchday income. Although the Owls are unlikely to suffer as badly as sides further down the pyramid, the suspension of football will affect them more than most of their Championship rivals. The Yorkshire club gained around 37% of their total income from revenue at the last count – among the highest in the second tier.

Alex Miller of the Sheffield Star reported that the EFL wrote to all member clubs last week and asked them not to resume training until April 14th at the earliest. That date could be moved back in line with government advice as the coronavirus situation continues to escalate.
