EFL Ones to Watch: Cameron Brannagan

Central midfielder Cameron Brannagan has been a key figure for Oxford United since joining from Liverpool in January 2018. The 23-year-old has gone on to make over 100 appearances for the U’s, where he has scored 13 goals and provided 12 assists.

The Midfielder With it All

Cameron Brannagan is a midfielder that can do it all. The former Liverpool man can dictate the pace of the game from the centre of the park. His range of passing is lethal and can provide dangerous attacks rapidly. He can also cover defensively, dropping deep to provide shelter for the back four.

Brannagan is quick, skilful and has bags of energy. This season for Oxford, injuries aside, the midfielder has played the full 90 minutes in most games and has a pass success rate of just under 85 per cent.

Jurgen Klopp Praised the Midfielder

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said Cameron Brannagan has “everything you need” in a midfield player. During his time at Anfield, Brannagan made nine appearances having joined as a nine-year-old. He made three appearances in the Premier League, three in the FA Cup, two in the Europa League and one in the League Cup.

He was touted as one for the future with the Premier League leaders but decided to join Oxford with the guarantee of regular football, having dropped back into the U23 side.

Interest is High

Naturally, with Oxford United having a successful season, interest is high in Brannagan. Earlier this season, Championship leaders Leeds United sent scouts to Grenoble Road to keep an eye on the 23-year-old as the Whites prepare a summer bid for the midfielder.

If his performances remain consistent and if the U’s fail to achieve promotion, then the time for a move away from the club could be right. However, of Oxford secure promotion, Brannagan may want to complete a season in the Championship with the U’s, before potentially securing a bigger move.
