REPORT: Alisson and Virgil van Dijk Set to Sign New Liverpool Contracts

Under the assumption that the current Premier League season is played to a finish, and that Liverpool somehow do not end up the winners, it appears likely that two of their title-securing contingent will be sticking around. According to Daniel Blackham of the Daily Express, goalkeeper Alisson and defender Virgil van Dijk, two of the key figures in the Reds’ season, are set to sign new contracts.

Good News at Last

It seemed for all the world that Liverpool were about to secure their first league title in 30 years. However, the Coronavirus pandemic has forced the Premier League to halt the season until at least the end of April, prolonging what is surely inevitable.

Despite having that snatched away from them, there appears to finally be some good news for the Reds. Two of their standout players this season are set to be rewarded for their contributions as Alisson and van Dijk look set to sign new deals.

Virgil van Dijk

The Dutchman’s contract runs until 2023, so Liverpool have no immediate fear of losing him. That is, unless, one of Europe’s powerhouses comes in with an astronomical bid to prise him away from the heart of Liverpool’s defence.

There is no rush to get the deal done, but it is being reported that van Dijk is happy to sign the new contract and that they will finalise the details in due course.

Alisson

The Brazilian goalkeeper has been the answer to Liverpool’s problems in that department over recent years. While his current deal does not end for another four years, the Reds are reportedly willing to show their commitment to him with a pay rise and an extension.

Similarly to van Dijk, there is no suggestion that he is unhappy or wants to leave, and it is simply a case of Liverpool securing their prized assets for the long term.
