REPORT: Barnsley Boss Gerhard Struber Confident Alex Mowatt Will Sign New Deal

Alex Mowatt

Barnsley head coach Gerhard Struber is confident that midfielder Alex Mowatt will sign a new deal at the club. The 25-year-old’s current deal expires this summer. If Mowatt does commit his future, it will be a sign of his loyalty to the club as it’s currently up in the air over which division they will be playing in next season.

Struber Confident of Survival

Staying up, though, is something that Struber feels the squad is capable of.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, he said: “The idea is to keep our core group together. We believe we are going to stay in the Championship.

“But if we don’t, we would still like to keep the group who are keeping us successful on the field to remain at Oakwell.

“Alex is the only one right now who has only got one year left. Everyone else is on multiple-year contracts.

“We have had several extension talks and given several extension offers and have one on the table right now which we are working towards to get Alex on a longer-term contract.”

Mowatt a Key Player for the Tykes

Barnsley may have spent the majority of this season in the bottom four of the Championship following their promotion from League One, but Mowatt has been a key figure for the club.

The 25-year-old, who has made 36 appearances in all competitions for the Tykes, has scored three goals and provided seven assists this season. The former Leeds United man was also appointed captain back in September as Struber’s side lost at home against the Whites.

This season, the midfielder has featured on a regular basis for Barnsley and has been involved in the second-highest number of games, only behind striker Conor Chaplin, who has played 36 times.

Barnsley have won three from their last four games as they look to avoid the drop, but still find themselves five points from safety. The Tykes welcome Cardiff City tomorrow afternoon before a trip to Loftus Road to face Queens Park Rangers next weekend.
