Nemanja Matic: Manchester United’s Unsung Hero

Nemanja Matic

Manchester United are on an eight-match unbeaten streak following the 1-1 draw with Everton on Sunday. Many players have improved recently. New signing Bruno Fernandes hit the ground running, while midfield partner Fred is contributing more for the team. An unsung hero from United’s upturn in form, though, is from defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic. After a disappointing first half of the season, the 31-year-old is showing a return to his best form.

Importance in Defence

Matic started the last three Premier League fixtures for United and played every minute of these games. The Red Devils only conceded once in these fixtures.

The 31-year-old takes up intelligent defensive positions that help the team win the ball back. He made three interceptions against Chelsea and Watford and a further four against Everton. No United player has completed more in the past three matches.

Looking to Play Forward

When the battling Serbian midfielder wins the ball back, he is demonstrating excellent composure and looks to play forward, something he was criticised for not doing in the past.

In the 3-0 win over Watford recently, Matic played five key passes, more than any of his team-mates. Against Everton yesterday, the Serb made another two key passes and provided an assist, playing the ball into the final third for Bruno Fernandes to finish from 25 yards.

His forward play was also clear with his willingness to drive forward with the ball and shoot. Matic hit the bar from just outside the area in the first half.

Matic is looking more assured in the deeper midfield role, showing his willingness to play forward into dangerous positions with Fernandes supporting in the attack.

Influence

The 31-year-old brings a wealth of experience to a young United side. His role in midfield helps him to organise the team.

But his influence off the pitch was apparent last week. The Serbian spoke to the press and highlighted how the club should be further up the league and challenging for the title.

In the same interview, he also challenged the younger players in the squad to improve their performances if they want to challenge for titles in the future.

The comments were well received by United fans and reflect the determination Matic has shown on the pitch recently.
