REPORT: Edson Alvarez Back on Tottenham Hotspur’s Radar

Edson Alvarez

Edson Alvarez is reportedly a target for Tottenham Hotspur after a failed bid in January. Dutch media outlet De Telegraaf has reported that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy approached Ajax but boss Erik Ten Hag was steadfast that the 22-year-old defender was not for sale.

Edson Alvarez a Summer Possibility for Tottenham Hotspur

Substitutes Bench Not Where Mexican Wants to Be

The Mexican joined Ajax last summer but has become concerned over his playing time. Alvarez attracted attention from the likes of Celtic previously. The report also claims that LA Galaxy, along with Tottenham, made moves for him but with no success.

In his last 12 games for Ajax, Alvarez has been an unused substitute on ten occasions. It is not the position the player envisaged himself being in when he signed. Ajax only paid £13 million for Alvarez, which is little in today’s frenzied transfer market. If he tries to force a transfer then the price could drop which would appeal to Daniel Levy.

Alvarez Could be the Right Option for Spurs and the Player

With both Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld struggling for form, Tottenham need reinforcements. At 22, Alvarez is the right age and could join the likes of Japhet Tanganga and Davinson Sanchez as stars of the future.

Meanwhile, the Belgian pairing of Vertonghen and Alderweireld appear to not be what they once were and there’s every chance their current deals could be wound down.

Spurs have been struggling at the back recently with goals being leaked too easily and individual errors costing too many points.

Tottenham may have been rebuffed in January but with a rebuild an absolute necessity this summer, Alvarez could be the hungry type of player that Jose Mourinho needs. He would also come at a discounted price befitting Tottenham Hotspur’s stringent transfer policy.
