Carlisle United have completed the loan signing of goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst from Sheffield United. The highly-rated 18-year-old will stay at Carlisle until the end of the season. Dewhurst has represented England at U17 and U18 teams but has yet to make a senior appearance for the Blades.

Marcus Dewhurst Signs For Carlisle From Sheffield United

An Important Signing for Carlisle

Dewhurst has gained first-team experience at non-league level with Gainsborough Trinity and Guiseley. He will now be hoping to force his way into the Carlisle first-team squad and make his football league debut.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Carlisle manager head coach Chris Beech said that the signing of the goalkeeper was an important one: “We thought it was important to bring in a goalkeeper before the end of the window to cover us for any potential injuries. We didn’t want to be left short, and we’re also bringing in a goalkeeper who is very ambitious. It will be good for him to be around a professional first-team environment, and to be pushing for a place in the squad every week. He’s played a lot of games at a non-league level already, so this is the natural next step for him.

“We have to thank Sheffield United who have helped us financially with this deal, and we all look forward to working with Marcus for the rest of the season.”

Striker Turned Goalkeeper

Dewhurst began his career not as a goalkeeper but as a striker. He moved from one end of the pitch to the other when he converted to wearing goalkeeping gloves. His progress since suggests he made the correct choice. As well as representing England and having loan spells in non-league football, Dewhurst has also been on a pre-season tour with the Blades when they visited Portugal last summer. United think highly of the youngster and will be hoping this move will give him the experience he requires.
