Wycombe Wanderers have signed experienced goalkeeper David Stockdale from Birmingham City on loan for the rest of the season. The keeper arrives as the Chairboys second January signing.

Wycombe Sign David Stockdale on Loan

The Deal

Wycombe announced via their website they had signed the keeper. Stockdale returns to Adams Park after a brief spell last season. He joins on loan for the remainder of the season.

He made a big impression during his emergency loan spell helping Wycombe to crucial victories against Shrewsbury Town and Accrington Stanley.

Gareth Ainsworth has been in the market for a goalkeeper after Wycombe’s number two Cameron Yates suffered an injury. Ainsworth has found an excellent player to compete with Ryan Allsop.

Stockdale has vast amounts of experience having played at all levels of English football. He was part of the Brighton & Hove Albion team which won promotion to the Premier League in 2017. However, he has found game time extremely limited since joining Birmingham.

The keeper has fallen behind the likes of Connell Trueman and Lee Camp. Stockdale is delighted to be back and determined to aid Wycombe’s unlikely promotion charge.

He becomes Wycombe’s second signing of the January window after Jason McCarthy returned to the club last week. Ainsworth clearly looking at players he knows will work hard and get Wycombe the results they need.

Gareth Ainsworth could hand Stockdale a second Chairboys debut against Blackpool on Tuesday.

What Was Said

Speaking about his new signing, manager Gareth Ainsworth said: “David made a big impression on us last season, on and off the pitch, and we’re really pleased to have him back to strengthen the goalkeeping department.

“Ryan has had a very good season so far, and played a big part in us reaching where we are in the table, and we want to be sure of having the strongest squad possible for the run-in.”
