Tottenham Hotspur Need to Rework Transfer Policy

Tottenham Hotspur have been the perennial dark horses of the premier league under Mauricio Pochettino but they have failed to transition into title winners.

Tottenham Hotspur Need to Rework Transfer Policy

Pochettino moulded Tottenham Hotspur into a club that could compete at the very highest level. And he did so as Tottenham went two full transfer windows without signing a player. During his tenure, Poch’ was creating something that the fans could see was working. Until the last couple of years, many fans expected the team to go on to win the League. The hard work, dedication, and effort can not be unrecognised, however, the final step eluded Poch’. Ultimately, he failed to deliver the top prize but he performed amazingly well with limited transfer input. Can Mourinho change their fortunes?

Do Tottenham Have the Financial Muscle to Make Big Transfers?

Daniel Levy has done wonders with Tottenham off of the pitch. A new stadium, consistent top four contenders, and for the first time ever they have overtaken Arsenal in revenue. Although, Levy still receives harsh critique for the inactivity of Tottenham in the transfer market. The moderate spending and Pochettino’s coaching has left the team with a good foundation. However, if the goal is to win it all, and it should be, then the club needs to be strong in the transfer market. Additionally, key areas of the Spurs squad need some improvement, yet it hasn’t happened. The new-found wealth should be protected but it also needs to be invested to ensure that they win trophies.

There are major concerns at right-back, no out and out replacement for Kane, and the eventual departure of Christian Eriksen will leave a creative void. It has been made clear that Tottenham need to sell players in order to generate transfer funds. With that being said, the team has let a disgruntled Christian Eriksen run his contract down. With his contract up this summer, he will likely leave for free. Allowing one of their best players to run down his contract is baffling when the Tottenham transfers policy requires player sales to generate funds.

Can Spurs Change Their Fortunes by Spending One?

Mourinho is a winner. No doubts there. He is also a manager that knows what he wants in the transfer market. Mourinho has already improved Tottenham instilling a new tactical ethos onto the squad. However, there are obvious weaknesses. Certain players do not fit this new system. In the past, Mourinho has stated he prefers to buy specialist players that will suit his tactics. Additionally, Mourinho currently tops the list of highest-spending managers. On the other hand, Levy is a tough negotiator but will not pay for overpriced players. This will prove to be a key issue. Levy has already shown that he is willing to let top managers leave rather than change his stance on transfers. It is now a case of whether Levy and Mourinho can collaborate to ensure success.
