Oldham Athletic have confirmed that striker Zak Dearnley has returned to the club on a deal until the end of the season.

Familiar Face at Oldham

Dearnley spent last season on loan at Boundary Park from Manchester United.

He made nine appearances during his short-term loan with the club, scoring just once. However, he returned to Old Trafford midway through his loan spell after picking up an injury.

The end of the 2018/19 season saw the 21-year-old released by Manchester United but, following a trial, he has made the return to Oldham.

While not the most prolific striker, Dearnley will add strength-in-depth to the Oldham squad. Jonny Smith is currently the top scorer in the squad, having registered just five so far this season.

Busy January Transfer Window

The arrival of Zak Dearnley confirms the fourth signing of the winter window for Oldham.

Manager Dino Maamria has already added midfielder Christian N’Guessan, defender Carl Piergianni and striker Emmanuel Dieseruvwe. All have agreed loan deals until the end of the season.

Piergianni and Dieseruvwe both arrive from nearby neighbours Salford City. The pair helped earn the Ammies promotion from the National League last season; however, they have featured sporadically so far this season in League Two.

Meanwhile, Christian N’Guessan joins on loan from Burnley. The 21-year-old has not earned a first-team appearance for Sean Dyche’s side so far in his career.

The new additions will be hoping that they can lead the Latics away from the relegation zone. Oldham currently sit 20th in League Two, having collected 27 points from 26 games.

Their last win came on Boxing Day, a 2-1 win away to fellow relegation rivals Morecambe. However, since then they have suffered three defeats and one draw, including a humiliating 4-1 defeat to local rivals Salford City.
