REPORT: Arsenal Consider Nuno Espirito Santo to Replace Unai Emery

Unai Emery

Arsenal have endured a tough start to the season under Unai Emery; his Arsenal side have found themselves victims of the top six’s bifurcation, already eight points from the top-four. With no win in their last six games, a no Premier League victory since early October, time could be running out for Emery. But who are the Gunners lining up as his potential replacement?

Arsenal Consider Santo To Replace Unai Emery

Steve Sammers of Mail Online writes that Arsenal are considering attempting to bring Nuno Espirito Santo to the Emirates. The Portuguese manager has impressed since 2016, leading Wolverhampton Wanderers to the Championship title; now his wolfpack are entrenched in the Premier League’s upper reaches, also coping with Europa League football. Arsenal Head of Football Raul Sanllehi has a very good relationship with Santo. As such, he could use this to their advantage. How long before these Santo links are put to good use, though?

Next Games Could be Crucial for Gunners

Indeed, this could be a defining week for Unai Emery at Arsenal; it could either buy him more time, or see his sentence confirmed. According to Jack Otway of Express, Edu and Sanllehi are willing to support Emery during his winless run. However, failure to win against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday and Norwich City at the weekend could force their hand. There were boos and jeers as the Gunners laboured to a 2-2 draw against strugglers Southampton on Saturday. If they fail to beat another relegation-threatened outfit, the Emirates will have a much less welcoming atmosphere. Four wins from 13 games is a record nowhere near good enough for an Arsenal manager.

If reports from Goal’s Charles Watts are correct, the writing could already be on the wall for Emery behind the scenes. Sources say that Arsenal’s backroom staff believe it to be a case of ‘when not if’ the Spaniard is sacked. In any case, Emery is walking a tightrope at Arsenal; will he fall can or he land the next jump?
