Europe’s Best Defence: Reims the Rock Solid Team in Europe

Europe's best defence

It has been an excellent season for Reims in Ligue 1. Les Rouges et Blancs find themselves eighth in Ligue 1 with 19 points from their 13 games. However, their most impressive trait is that they boast the best defence in Europe conceding just six goals.

Reims Currently Europe’s Best Defence

Solid Foundations Have Been Crucial to Their Success

David Guion’s team boast the best defence in Europe, conceding just six league goals. Paris Saint-Germain and Leicester City are their closest challengers, but their defence has been rock solid this season.

Reims on average concede a goal every 196 minutes, which is staggering. Due to their tight backline, games involving Reims usually see very few goals. Only one Reims game has seen more than two goals – their loss to Dijon.

Their backline has been outstanding this season and has been the foundation to their success this season. Reims have struggled offensively, scoring just nine goals in 13 league games, but their defence has been the reason why they have plenty of points. Predrag Rajkovic has been excellent in goal having replaced the brilliant Edouard Mendy, who departed in the summer. The Serbian international has nine clean sheets in 13 appearances.

Guion has found a defence he is firmly happy with. Thomas Foket, Axel Disasi, Yunis Abelhamid and Ghislain Konan have formed a brilliant group together. Foket, who arrived as a midfielder in 2018, has excelled at full-back. Abelhamid and Disasi have formed a sensational partnership which has blossomed with every game this season. The experienced Abelhamid has nurtured Disasi and the youngster is performing brilliantly.

Reims’ excellent season thus far has been built on their terrific defensive foundations. However, Guion will be aware that his team need to find their attacking threat having notched just nine goals.

Reims Face a Busy Finish to 2019

Reims face six league fixtures before the end of the year that will fully test their resolve. They travel to Metz before games with Bordeaux, Amiens and Saint Etienne. They finish 2019 with games against Toulouse and Lyon.

Reims will rely on their steel defence but will need the likes of Remi Oudin, Anastasios Donis and Arber Zeneli to step up and score the goals. They are firmly enjoying their title of Europe’s best defence and will be determined to maintain it once the season resumes.
