The Situation

Josip Maria Bartomeu, Barcelona president, confirmed last week that Lionel Messi has a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave next summer. This is despite his contract running until 2021.

However, now it seems that the club is looking to keep their prized possession for the remainder of his career. The Barcelona president is keen to offer a lifelong deal to the Argentinian.

A Barcelona and Football Legend

It would be hard to imagine Barcelona without Lionel Messi. The 32-year-old has spent the entirety of his career at the Nou Camp, and now looks set to remain.

Having made his debut in the 2004/05 season as a young 17-year-old, the Argentinian has gone on to become of the best players of all time. During his time with Barcelona, he has broken countless records and won a total of 34 trophies.

At times, Messi has won Barcelona trophies by himself. Since the 2008/09 season, Lionel Messi has scored more than 30 goals in every season, a feat that has earned him the tag as one of the greatest players to live.

Could Lionel Messi Be Swayed From Barcelona?

There is one club that could see Messi leave Barcelona. The report in Mundo Deportivo claims that he would like to play for Argentinian club Newell’s Old Boys, the club in Lionel Messi’s hometown and where he started his career.

As a result, Barcelona may find it hard to step in the way of their club legend’s desires. It may be the only way that he leaves the Nou Camp, even if it was towards the tail-end of his career.
