Winless Start

Southend United boss Kevin Bond has resigned after six defeats at the start of League One.

Bond had been in charge at Roots Hall since taking the reins in April. He saved the Shrimpers from relegation last term after taking eight points from six matches.

However, with one three victorious from his 15 games in charge, Bond met with Southend chairman Ron Martin to tender his resignation.

“Unfortunately the euphoria at the end of last season hasn’t translated to the pitch so far this season,” Martin said.

“However, I remain confident that the players we have at Southend United, including the strong signings made by Kevin Bond, will enable a successful season under the guidance of a new manager.”

Southend sit 22nd in the table with a goal difference of minus 13. The Shrimpers are ahead only of Bolton Wanderers, the Trotters were given a 12-point deduction at the start of the season.

Bond, whose final game in charge was a 2-0 defeat to Leyton Orient in the EFL Trophy, signed a two-year contract with the Essex side in May.

The 63-year-old previously worked as an assistant to Harry Redknapp at Tottenham Hotspur, QPR and Birmingham City; none of the Southend management team spoke to the media after United’s midweek Trophy defeat.

“His accomplishments in keeping the club in League One last season needs to be acknowledged and will long be remembered by the club’s supporters,” added Martin.

Bond had previously stated that he would not quit the Blues but, after Martin returned from holiday on Thursday, the former QPR assistant had his resignation accepted.
