REPORT: Arsenal Complete the Signing of Chelsea Defender David Luiz

David Ornstein of the BBC is reporting that Arsenal have sensationally completed the signing of David Luiz from Chelsea for a fee in the region of £8 million. The Brazilian will sign a 2-year deal at The Emirates.

David Luiz Signs For Arsenal

Last Season

The Brazilian was a key figure under previous manager Maurizio Sarri last season. He made a total of 42 appearances last season, scoring three goals. Luiz also started the Europa League final win over Arsenal.

His defensive statistics made for positive reading. Last season he made a total of 41 tackles in the Premier League, completing 76% of them successfully.

Why Has David Luiz Left Cheslea?

Everything appeared normal between David Luiz and Chelsea up until yesterday. There were reports that the 32-year-old had fallen out with the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge. This was after they could not promise him a sufficient amount of game time this season.

As a result of his fallen out, Luiz was forced to train with Chelsea’s academy players yesterday.

How Will David Luiz Fit In At Arsenal?

Luiz wll significantly improve Arsenal’s defence ahead of their new campaign.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery is short of quality in the centre of defence. Shkodran Mustafi made several mistakes last season; while Sokratis failed to deliver last season. Arsenal are in desperate need of quality in their defence.

A Short Team Solution

Despite a signing of Luiz’s magnitude. Some may argue that he is a short team solution to Arsenal’s defensive problems due to his age.

The Brazilian is now 32 years old and likely only has a one or two more seasons playing at the highest level.

As a result, Arsenal may have been worthwhile searching for a younger alternative. They were reportedly looking at RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano. However, his transfer fee proved too expensive for The Gunners, potentially over £50 million on the 20-year-old.
