Ousseynou Cisse Announces That He is to Leave MK Dons

MK Dons midfielder Ousseynou Cisse has announced via Twitter that he is to leave the club after sealing promotion back to League One. Cisse spent two years in Milton Keynes and there is, as yet, no indication of where he will play next.

Ousseynou Cisse to Leave MK Dons

Difficult Start

Cisse joined the club in 2017 as one of the many Robbie Neilson signings as he sought to rebuild the club. He made is debut in the opening day defeat to Wigan Athletic and was a regular in the opening stages of the season. However, he struggled to adapt to English football and was heavily criticised for his performances under Neilson.

His only goal that season was an important one though, as the Dons shocked Championship side Queens Park Rangers in the FA Cup by winning 1-0 at Loftus Road. Cisse picked up the ball from a loose backpass and confidently curled in his first goal.

Huge Improvement

Many predicted that Cisse would leave the club last year after a poor first campaign, but new manager Paul Tisdale showed faith in his player and kept him at the club.

It paid dividends in the Dons’ first home game of 2018/19 as it was Cisse, on as a substitute, who scored the late winner against Bury – three points that proved vital come the end of the season.

Goals aside, the performances from Cisse were a level above compared to his time under Neilson and Dan Micciche. Despite playing in a host of positions, even as a second striker in the season’s very early stages, his attitude and desire was taken to well by fans and he quickly changed from a scapegoat into a cult hero.

The Future

MK Dons are yet to issue their released and retained list going into next season. Perhaps Cisse’s own statement shows just how late the announcement from the club is getting. After such a turnaround in fortunes for the Mali international, he is one player that fans would most certainly not have wanted to see on the released list. Now though, they must say goodbye to one of the club’s most liked players in recent history.
