Danny Ings has completed a move from Liverpool to Southampton on loan. Since moving to Liverpool from Burnley at the start of the 2015/2016 season, the 26-year-old has made a total of 15 appearances.
Unfortunate injuries to both his knees at separate times have sidelined Ings for more of his time on Merseyside than he would have liked.
Now back ready to play and fighting fit, the striker finds himself well down the pecking order in the current Liverpool squad.
Danny Ings Moves to Southampton on Loan
Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Daniel Sturridge and even Dominic Solanke are all ahead of Ings for the first team spots. Ings made a comeback of sorts towards the end of last season, and even scored against West Brom, but the call of first-team football will have been strong.
A permanent move was on the cards in this transfer window, however, a loan always had the potential to surface as well as many wanted his Liverpool move to eventually work out.
The move on loan to Southampton will see the Englishman with more match time. This will enable Ings to get back to regular first-team starts and should inspire confidence which will lead to more goals.
Goals are something that Southampton lacked last season, which saw them barely survive in the Premier League last season. The Saints will want to ensure survival again and hopefully re-establish themselves and bringing in Ings as an addition to the strike force gives more options.
Southampton faced tough competition in the race to sign Ings on loan; at least three other Premier League clubs were interested.
Whilst Liverpool remain as the parent club, Southampton now have the freedom to use Ings in their first team squad enabling them to alternate their other strikers, thereby resting players for games during tough periods.
