Lucas Torreira Completes Arsenal Move

The summer’s business continues with another big-money move. This time, it is Uruguayan Lucas Torreira who makes a change, transferring to Arsenal FC after weeks of speculation.

This is a massive move for the highly-rated youngster, aged just 22. It is known the player had a release clause of €25 million, although the transfer fee is thought to be €30 million.

Lucas Torreira Signs for Arsenal

Torreira plays as a defensive midfielder, although can be viewed as a deep-lying creative midfielder. While his main assets are his passing ability and positioning, Lucas Torreira is also a hard-working and combative player.

The Uruguayan began his career in his native country for 18 de Julio. He transferred to capital club Montevideo Wanderers in 2013, before impressing enough to earn a move to Italy with Pescara.

After just five matches with the Serie B side, Pescara sold him to Sampdoria, but the player stayed on loan for another season. In his first, and only, full campaign in the Italian second division, Lucas Torreira racked up 29 appearances and four goals in all competitions.

In 36 Serie A matches with Sampdoria last season, the midfielder averaged 2.8 tackles and two interceptions per match. Additionally, Torreira claimed a passing rate of 87.2 per cent and added four goals and one assist.

The midfielder also has an impressive amount of experience given his age. Over the course of his three years at Sampdoria, Torreira has 74 appearances in all competitions. This is in addition to being a part of Uruguay’s 2018 World Cup squad.

Sampdoria’s Lynchpin

At Sampdoria, Lucas Torreira served as the side’s lynchpin. He usually deployed as the base of their three-man midfield and used his vision and passing ability to conduct the buildup play.

Lucas Torreira’s cool head serves him well in such situations, as he has the ability to either hold the ball or find an open man. The Uruguayan also tends to stay behind the play, contributing in covering the defence when necessary.

He is a true two-way player and will aid his new club greatly.
