Oxford United Appoint Karl Robinson As New Manager

Oxford United have appointed Karl Robinson as their new manager, just hours after he left Charlton Athletic by mutual consent.

The former MK Dons boss succeeds Pep Clotet at the Kassam Stadium. The Spaniard only joined the U’s in the summer, however, was relieved of his duties almost two months ago. Robinson had been with Charlton since his six-year stint with MK Dons came to an end in late 2016.

“Exciting Prospects”

Following his appointment, Karl Robinson said his new post at Oxford United holds “exciting prospects”.

Currently sitting 16th in League One, Oxford have struggled to follow-up last season’s success. However, following the club’s recent takeover, Robinson believes there is a lot to look forward to.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Robinson said: “It was an offer that really appealed once you sat down and thought about it. It’s an exciting challenge with the opportunity to come here and build something.”

New Era At The Kassam Stadium?

Last month, Thai businessman Sumrith Thanakarnjanasuth completed a consortium takeover at Oxford United.

Now with Karl Robinson at the helm, is this the start of a new era at The Kassam?

Playing in the third-tier, success has been reasonable at the club in recent seasons. They finished eighth last season and the club would have been hoping to build on that this season. Instead, though, they have seemingly underachieved.

Robinson is no stranger to the third-tier, so with this in mind, one has to wonder if this is a recipe for success in the near future at the club.

Uncertainty at Charlton

There have been issues with the London-based club for a while now. Protests over the Belgian ownership have marred a number of matches. However, with Roland Duchatelet now seeking to sell the club, it always seemed likely that Robinson would need to step aside while the Addicks went through the process of the change.

“There are so many different circumstances that could happen there,” he said. “I offered to resign as I didn’t think it was right for people to come in without their own man in charge.”
