Heung-Min Son Should Start for Spurs

Heung-Min Son

South Korean international Heung-Min Son has been in impressive form this season. Despite only starting seven times in the Premier League so far, the winger has five league goals to his name. Son has struggled for regular game time so far this season but when he has featured he has shined. Considering how sporadic the performances of both Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen have been this season and how difficult Tottenham have found breaking down the opposition, it is starting to look like Heung-Min Son deserves a regular starting place at Tottenham.

Heung-Min Son’s goals

Heung-Min Son has been a great goalscorer his entire career.  As a winger, the Korean usually gets into double figures across all competitions. Son’s ability to dribble past players and score from distance is something the current Tottenham side has struggled with. Son is also one of the few players in the squad who can take players on with pace. Tottenham should exploit this more as most teams have been implementing deep blocks so far this season. Spurs have struggled to get in behind sides and challenge defences.

Consistency

Despite being a regular goalscorer Son’s overall play has often let much to be desired. In his first two seasons at the club, the Korean fluctuated wildly between world class and Sunday league with next to no in-between. Despite being such a prolific goalscorer the Korean has yet to start over fifteen Premier league games in a season at Tottenham. Manager Mauricio Pochettino still does not trust Son to turn up in the big games but this season has been different. In recent weeks the Korean has developed the ability to have “average games”. Son cannot be in top form yet still contribute to the side. It is maybe time Pochettino starts placing more faith in him.

Composure

There is a common saying associated with Son “Give him half a second and he can score from anywhere, give him three seconds and he’ll bottle it.” The Korean relies on instinct, however, when he has time to access a situation he over complicates it and squanders the opportunity. This remains the biggest flaw in his game and has cost Tottenham in the past like the infamous one vs one against Monaco when he ended up at the corner flag despite being sent clear on goal.

Verdict

The South Korean has opened the club up to new markets overseas. To date, it can be argued he has contributed as much off the pitch as he has on it. Given the stagnant nature of Tottenham’s form this season the Korean can be the catalyst to kick-start their season. Heung-Min Son deserves the chance of a regular run in the Tottenham side to show his quality,
