Lionel Messi Scores His 100th Goal in Europe

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi came in to the match against Olympiakos tonight on 99 career European goals. He was able to set yet another prolific milestone in his storied career by bagging his 100th in the 61st minute to put Barcelona 2-0 up.

The goal came from a left-footed free kick from about 20 yards out. He curled the kick over the top of the wall, and despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to it, it wasn’t enough to stop history from being made. This milestone makes Messi the second player to break the 100-goal mark in European play, after Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi has been in stellar form this season, as always, and this is just the icing on top of the cake. The 30-year-old attacker has 11 goals and two assists in eight appearances for Barcelona in La Liga this season. Despite being behind Ronaldo in the European goal scoring tally, Messi is two years younger than him. Whether or not he will go on to overtake the Portuguese striker is yet to be seen.

Messi has scored ten or more goals in the Champions League on four occasions since the 2009-10 season. He scored 12 in 2010-11, 14 in 2011-12, 10 in 2014-15 and 11 in 2016-17. These 47 goals came in just 46 matches as well.

His lowest goal tally in a Champions League campaign came in 2015-16 when he only played in seven matches, scoring six goals in the process. He has also scored eight in a campaign three times (2009-10, 2012-13, 2013-14).
