Diego Costa Set to Leave Chelsea

After winning their second Premier League title in the past three seasons, Chelsea and manager Antonio Conte now appear ready to move on from controversial striker Diego Costa. The Spanish forward has stated that he “will need to find a way out” after Conte has made his feelings clear ahead of the summer transfer period.

After a disastrous final season under Jose Mourinho, Conte has added new life to the Blues en route to bringing the league trophy back to Stamford Bridge. Along with his switch to an effective 3-4-3 formation, the play of Costa was a key element to success.

The 28-year-old scored 20 Premier League goals and added seven assists in 35 matches.

Options ahead

Costa has been linked heavily with a return to Atletico Madrid, as well as lucrative rumours involving the Chinese Super League. However, what is certain is that the relationship between Chelsea’s Italian tactician and their star striker has reached a critical point.

“My relationship with the coach has been bad this season. I suppose I’ve had a bad season so I can’t go on,” Costa said.

A busy transfer period in London

Chelsea and owner Roman Abramovich must now examine what they want to see from their front-line. A replacement for Costa will not be easy, but the current situation can clearly not continue.

With rumours that Eden Hazard could be sold this summer as well, next season’s line-up could see an entirely different attacking front. Although the Belgian’s recent injury while on international duty has made his own future uncertain.

Diego Costa’s playing style and temper have combined for heavy criticism from fellow players and pundits alike, but his goalscoring exploits have normally been able to shine. Now set for a summer departure from Stamford Bridge, the coming months will be intriguing for both Chelsea and their enigmatic striker.
