This afternoon Sunderland’s football club announced that David Moyes had decided to resign. The decision comes after talks with club owner Ellis Short. Breaking News: David Moyes Resigns as Sunderland Manager

For Moyes it is yet another disappointing spell as manager. Since a successful spell at Everton, spells in charge at Manchester United and Real Sociedad did not go to plan. However worse was to come. He was appointed Sunderland’s manager last summer after the departure of Sam Allardyce. The team struggled from the off and never really got going. His signings, team selections and also interviews did not come across as confident. From the outset he announced that the Black Cats would be in a relegation battle. He was not wrong, but it it was not what fans, players or his employers wanted to be hearing.

Just a few short weeks ago, it was announced that Moyes would be staying on as manager and that he would be at the club to help mount a push for promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt. It was obvious however, that many fans were not happy about this decision and voiced the concerns at games that followed.

After the 5-1 defeat at Chelsea on the final day of the season, Moyes advised he would be speaking to owner Ellis Short with regards to the future. These talks did not go as either man wanted and David Moyes stepped down as manager. “I would like to thank Ellis Short and the board for giving me the opportunity to manage Sunderland and the fans for always being so passionately supportive of their club. I wish the players and my successor well in their efforts towards promotion back to the Premier League”.
