Tottenham’s World-Class Potential

Tottenham's world-class potential is slowly being revealed, with their excellent players, intuitive manager and with the construction of a new stadium.

Tottenham’s World-Class Potential

Tottenham’s world-class potential may even into a reality if the club manages to close the gap on Premier League leaders Chelsea. However, Spurs look less likely seize the trophy with their bitter rivals maintaining their lead. Nevertheless, Tottenham have made impressive progress under Pochettino, with the potential to become a world-class power in football.

Key Players

Dele Alli

Dele Alli is one of the firebrands of football. His passion and temperament can sometimes detract from his impressive performances. Nevertheless, he has great potential at just 20 years old. In his 30 appearances in the Premier League this season, he has scored 16 goals and has notched five assists. This is a formidable return for a midfield player.

Recently, he scored an astonishing strike against Watford, showcasing the best parts of his game. He collected the ball, making a positive run forward, exchanged passes with Ben Davies with a feinting run, before pulling the ball back onto his right foot and unleashing a menacing shot into the top right corner.

His frequent run-making behind defences causes havoc, especially with the quality of Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier’s long ball precision. With his ability to trick defenders, his collection of ‘nutmegs’ ever growing, Dele Alli is truly a magnificent player to behold.

If Spurs want to become a world-class outfit, they must retain their world-class players. Whilst he is not the finished product, he definitely has potential. Many rival fans dub him as another over-hyped English player, but he is starting to prove that this is not the case on a regular basis.

Hugo Lloris

France and Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. This is because of his phenomenal ability to defend his goal. Not only does he have lightning reflexes, but he also is a commanding presence in the area. As captain, he proves that he is able to lead and organise from the back. This is probably why Spurs’ defence has been so tight this season, because of the influence of this seasoned professional. At 30, he still has many years left to play. Spurs fans will hope to keep him at the club, to keep their defence strong and their team motivated.

Harry Kane

From ‘one-season wonder’ to one of the undisputed best strikers in the league, Kane is now proving his worth for a third season in a row. Despite another injury, he is still the Premier League’s second top scorer with 19 goals. This is the mark of a world-class centre-forward. Again, like Dele Alli, even Kane has room for improvement. However, to be scoring around 20 goals per season at his age is very promising.

His goals are invaluable to the club’s progress. World-class clubs have the strikers to score plenty of goals. Kane is yet to meet the calibre of the absolute elite, especially internationally and on the European stage, but he has great promise to fulfil this role someday.

A remarkable note this season is the contribution of others to the goal tally. Dele Alli, Heung-Min Son and Christian Eriksen have scored 48 goals between them in all competitions so far this season. Spurs seem to be developing into a world-class outfit, whereby there is no single reliance on any one player. Instead, there is a much wider source of goals. This can only put the club in greater stead for the future.

Magical Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino is arguably the most important factor in Spurs’ progress and will continue to be. He has banished the weak mentality that previously infected the team and has developed and adopted a new back-three system at the club to great success. He has even managed to achieve all of his successes with a much younger, hungrier team than his rivals.

The Pochettino project is still in motion and will be looking for some silverware with which to accredit itself. Arguably, this is the only thing that Pochettino hasn’t delivered for his team. However, with Spurs in the FA Cup semi-final and still in the title race, there is every possibility of Pochettino leading his players to glory.

New Stadium

Whilst it will be a sad moment to see White Hart Lane fall, the rise of the new stadium brings much excitement. This is another piece of the jigsaw of world-class success that is being put together. With increased capacity comes greater ticket revenue. This creates a more sustainable outlook for the future of the club. Crucially, this new stadium marks the start of a new Tottenham era. It could be the home of one of the world’s best teams in just a few years’ time.

Closing Thoughts

All in all, Tottenham have definitely progressed in all areas of the club. Personnel, staff and facilities have been upgraded, which promises much for the future. A world-class status is perhaps not reached yet, due to a lack of silverware. With each season, Spurs grow stronger and so do their chances of lifting a trophy. Thus, the club is agonisingly close to glory.
