With only six matchdays remaining, the Bundesliga top scorer race is nearing its end and there are still three strikers contending for the title.
For a majority of the season, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been the front-runner in the race, but after this weekend it’s Robert Lewandowski who has taken over the lead, and FC Köln’s Anthony Modeste finds himself just three goals off the lead.
Lewandowski To Break Last Season’s Record?
Bayern Munich fans held their breath on Saturday as Lewandowski left the match after a collision with Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki. The striker, however, is reported to be doing well and will be available to play in the Champions League against Real Madrid in mid-week.
The good news also means the striker has a chance to break his 30-goal record from last season. With six matches remaining in the German top flight for Bayern and having scored 26 goals, the Polish goalscorer should be able to at least equal his mark set from last season. Whether it will be enough for him to claim the golden boot is another matter.
Consistency Needed For Aubameyang
Last season, Aubameyang was unable to replicate his performance in the first half of the season and ultimately lost the lead to Lewandowski. This time around he finds himself in a similar position and needs every goal he can get to stay the course. Lately, he’s been a bit wasteful, which has been a trait at times for him this season. Nevertheless, he has managed 25 goals already and is only one point off the lead.
He’s scored in three of his last four Bundesliga appearances, but failed to produce against Bayern, only managing two shots. In the last month of the season, it will be imperative for him to find the back of the net regularly as Dortmund fight to consolidate their place in the Champions League places and he fights for the top scorer prize. At the moment it looks like a similar finish to last season’s top scorer race is on hand.
Modeste Moving Up
With 23 goals, FC Köln’s star player is just three goals off first place and two off second. Thus far in April, he’s only managed to score one goal, which came over the weekend against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
One advantage the French striker may have is he won’t have Champions League football to play in this month. Aubameyang and Lewandowski will have an extra two matches to play in each, which could mean fewer minutes for them in the league, especially since April is a busy month for both Dortmund and Bayern.
Regardless of where Modeste finishes, it has been the best season of his career. He’s accounted for 56% of the club’s goals after scoring 15 goals last season.
