Arsene Wenger Discusses the Club’s Third Straight Premier League Win

Hull, UK

Today’s win away at a 10-man Hull City gave Arsenal its third straight Premier League victory. The final scoreline had Arsenal comfortably ahead 4-1 at the final whistle. Arsenal sit on 10 points after five matches.

Alexis Sanchez very nearly scored a hat trick, and finished with a brace and a missed penalty. Granit Xhaka and Theo Walcott rounded out the Gunners’ scoring.

Alex Iwobi had a bright game for Arsenal. He has a claim on Sanchez’s first goal, with having deflected the ball off the Chilean on its way in. He was physical, something Arsenal have needed.

Arsene Wenger Discusses the match

In his post-match interview, Arsene Wenger noted the importance of the win coming off a short week after the clash with PSG in Paris.

“I was very happy with the performance. I think we started the game very well. And after having played a very different game away from home at Paris Saint-Germain to play away again and win the game, you’re happy always after Champions League.”

When asked whether he had any concerns throughout the match despite the scoreline, Wenger dismissed any feelings of anxiety. However, he admitted feeling the team lacked conviction toward the end of the match. “I felt we played the last 20 minutes without too much purpose to score one more goal. And then when it came back to 2-1, you never know what can happen, and it would have been a shame not to win the game.”

The interesting note of course is that is the exact sentiment many pundits aim at Arsenal—that they lack the killer instinct needed to win a title. While there is some truth to the speculation, they demonstrated resiliency, a backbone, mid-week in Paris.

When asked if he felt the side were a bit more ‘ruthless’ given the mixture of youth and veteran players, Wenger was quick to dismiss the notion, noting it’s early in the season.

“We are a bit more mature, what I’ve said many times. But it’s early in the season and it’s tight everywhere. At the moment Man City is in front, so I think let’s just continue to improve and continue to win our games and see where we go. But we are ambitious, we have a good attitude, a good spirit, and we have gained a bit of confidence now that we have won a few games.”
