David Luiz Makes Surprise Return to Chelsea

Reports indicate David Luiz has made a surprise return to Chelsea in a move from French Champions Paris St. Germain. Various reports detail the move between £30 million and £38 million. Stay tuned for full details.

It was just two years ago that Luiz joined Paris St. Germain, on a £50 million transfer.

David Luiz makes surprise return to Chelsea

The Brazilian defender was signed by PSG from Chelsea in 2014 in a £50m deal. He went on to make 89 appearances scoring eight times. But upon Antonio Conte’s interest in him this summer, the 29-year-old was keen to return to Stamford Bridge.

He first arrived in South London in 2010 from Benfica. During his first spell he became a regular feature in the centre defence, often alongside John Terry who remain at the club. Making a total of 143 appearances, he became renowned in England as a defender who was more adept moving forward with the ball than completing the defensive basics.

His technique and flair led him to operating in a central midfield role on occasion and taking responsibility at direct free kicks. It is thought, however, that Conte sees him primarily as a defender after outlining his team’s shortages in that area last week.

Marcos Alonso Move

Earlier in the day, Chelsea also completed the signing of Fiorentina left back, Marcos Alonso. The Spaniard has joined on a five-year deal for a fee of around £23m.

Alonso, a Real Madrid academy graduate, has previously spent three years in England with Bolton Wanderers. The 25-year-old then made the switch to Florence where he established himself as a first-team regular.

Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, Alonso said: “I’m very happy. It’s a step up in my career and I think this is the perfect place for me to continue developing. It’s time for me to win some titles.”
