Yankees Receive Injury Updates on Grisham, Fried

Manager Aaron Boone gave a couple of New York Yankees injury updates on Tuesday during an appearance on the Talkin’ Yanks podcast. Most notably, he said that outfielder Trent Grisham‘s new return timeline is “a few weeks” rather than just a 10-day stint on the injured list. Unfortunately for Grisham, who injured his right hamstring during Friday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, he was just starting to heat up at the plate. Over his last 15 games, he has a slash line of .328/.397/.492 with 20 hits, two home runs, and eight RBI.

Yankees Injury Updates: Grisham, Fried Out a Bit Longer

The second piece of news revealed by Boone is that Max Fried, who has been on the IL for over a month now, is scheduled to proceed to the next step of his rehab process, which is throwing a side session today at Yankee Stadium. Fried is dealing with a bone bruise on his throwing (left) elbow, which will sideline him for at least a few more weeks as he ramps up baseball activities. Before going on the IL, Fried was in the middle of a stellar sophomore season in pinstripes, tossing a total of 61 2/3 innings (10 starts) with 50 strikeouts, a 3.21 ERA, and a WHIP of 1.005. Notably, he’s allowed just one home run all season.

Never-Ending Injuries

Losing Grisham for a few more weeks isn’t a huge blow, even though he was finally starting to get back into a groove at the plate. However, all of the individual losses that the Yankees are sustaining could easily add up to disaster down the road. Right now, they’re missing almost half of their starting lineup (Grisham, Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Austin Wells), as well as three of their starting pitchers (Fried, Clarke Schmidt, and Luis Gil). No team that is missing this many starters is destined for long-term success.

It’s not time to panic, of course, since the Yankees have been getting a lot of help thanks to their extreme depth, especially on the pitching side of things. The rotation surely misses Fried, but things could’ve been much, much worse had Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón not returned to the fold. Amid all of these Yankees injury updates, all the team can do is hope that they don’t lose any more players.
