Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Chase Shugart elevates his game when the team has needed someone to step up. Shugart started the season with Triple-A Lehigh Valley before being called up on April 14 to replace Seth Johnson on the 26-man roster. Johnson was recalled from Triple-A when Jonathan Bowlan went on the injured list on April 13. Shugart has maintained his spot on the 26-man roster since even with some shuffling due to injuries. There is an argument to be made that Shugart should remain on the 26-man roster for the time being. The Phillies will need to make corresponding roster moves when those players are ready. Shugart can be optioned to the minor leagues.
This season in the majors Shugart has a 2-0 record with a 1.00 ERA and a 3.91 FIP along with a 1.11 WHIP in nine outings. Shugart has a career best 4.50 K/BB rate and a 1.00 HR/9 allowed rate. Additionally Shugart has a career best 24.3% strikeout rate and a career best 5.4% walk rate. Opposing batters have a .242 average and a .304 BABIP against Shugart this season. Shugart also has a career best 24 ERA- this year. Furthermore Shugart leads Phillies relief pitchers in ERA, left-on-base percentage and ERA- this season. Shugart also ranks second among Phillies relief pitchers with a 0.37 WPA this season. The Phillies bullpen has been a bright spot this season.
Phillies Shugart Elevating Game
Rare Feat During Doubleheader
On April 30, Shugart became the first pitcher since Brian Duensing in 2013 to record a win in both games of a doubleheader. Shugart became the first Phillies pitcher to accomplish. the feat since Terry Adams in 2002. For the Phillies Shugart elevates his game in these appearances getting them wins. Shugart pitched in the top of the tenth inning of the second game and kept the extra inning runner from scoring. Across the two outings Shugart faced five batters and allowed one hit. Shugart needed to pitch in the second game because the Phillies used up all of their other available relief pitchers.

General Success
This season Shugart has a 100% left-on-base percentage. The lone earned run Shugart has allowed this season came off a home run on April 17. Shugart has recorded seven consecutive scoreless outings. To add to that for the Phillies, Shugart elevates his play during this stretch and that is impressive for other reasons. Seven of the nine major league appearances Shugart has this season have come against the Atlanta Braves or the Chicago Cubs. The other two came on the same day against the San Francisco Giants. It is challenging for pitchers to have repeated success against the same opponents.
Recent Stretch Where Closer Has Been Out
Jhoan Duran has been on the injured list since April 18 as part of a flurry of roster moves they made. The Phillies have needed a right-handed relief pitcher to step up. Shugart elevates his game and has done that recording a 0.00 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP with a 2.63 FIP in that span. Opposing batters have a .227 average and a .313 BABIP against Shugart during this stretch. Furthermore Shugart has not allowed an extra base hit in this span. The 6.00 K/BB rate Shugart has since Duran went on the injured list is the best among Phillies relief pitchers. Shugart also has a bullpen leading 0.35 WPA in that span.
