White Sox Shortstop on IL, Out With MCL Sprain

White Sox Shortstop

Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson will be out for two to four weeks with a Grade 2 MCL sprain. The team has confirmed the injury as Anderson was placed on the 10-day IL. Anderson suffered the injury following a collision near third base during Monday’s win against the Minnesota Twins. He attempted to tag out Matt Wallner, who slid into the two-time All-Star’s legs. The 29-year-old remained in the game before being replaced in the sixth inning.

White Sox Shortstop Out, Sosa In

It’s brutal news, mainly since Anderson only played 79 games last season. Through 11 games this season, Anderson is hitting .298 with five doubles and five stolen bases. He ranks sixth in the AL with five runs scored and hits.

As for Sosa, he spent most of 2022 in Chicago’s farm system. He hit .313/.369/.511 with 22 doubles, 23 home runs, 79 RBI, 39 walks, with 77 runs scored in 119 games. He even appeared in 11 games with the White Sox, making his big league debut on June 23.

The 23-year-old is hitting .448 with five doubles, two home runs, and eight RBI with a 1.384 OPS in nine games with Triple-A Charlotte. Furthermore, Sosa ranks first among International League leaders in OBP (.556), second in OPS and doubles, and third in average and slugging percentage. He is the No. 8 ranked prospect, according to MLB.com.

With Anderson out for the next few weeks, Elvis Andrus should take over shortstop duties. Romy Gonzalez, Hanser Alberto and Sosa will likely take turns getting starts at second base. The start of the 2023 season for the White Sox hasn’t been so kind. They are 5-6 in the middle of the AL Central standings.
