The next step in the return process for MLB has come, with the release of this years Astros 60-game schedule. There are so many interesting aspects of this shortened schedule, for all teams, but the Houston Astros in particular. They battle the Dodgers in a 2017 World Series rematch, attempt to dominate a much improved AL West, and travel an immense amount of miles in just 66 days.
2017 World Series Rematch Highlights Astros 60 Game Schedule
One of the juiciest storylines in all of baseball will take place between Houston and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Astros have two, two-game sets versus Los Angeles, which occur July 28th and 29th at Houston, and September 12th and 13th at Dodger Stadium. It’s well documented that the sour feelings between the two teams stem from the Astros sign-stealing scandal in 2017.
The Dodgers were on the losing end in the year when Houston began their sign-stealing escapades, resulting in a World Series championship. All offseason the Dodgers dragged the Astros, Cody Bellinger in particular, which prompted Carlos Correa to tell the reigning NL MVP to be quiet albeit in a much harsher way. Anything can happen in these four games, which is why they will be must-see.
The lack of fans in the stands may diffuse the situation to a degree. Fans would have only added to the hype and the atmosphere around this World Series rematch. However, both sides will still be able to get their blood boiling for these four games, regardless who is inside of the stadium.
AL West Is More Competitive Than Ever
Over the past three seasons, the Astros have won the AL West, with some breathing room. However, some of the biggest offseason transactions occurred in the AL West. The Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers made some big moves to get Anthony Rendon and Corey Kluber respectively, among others. They join the Oakland A’s, who have made the postseason with 97 wins two years in a row, in an effort to take down the Astros.
There are some hungry teams behind the Astros. In their 60 game schedule, there are 40 divisional games, so every game counts. This division could very well come down to who handles the Seattle Mariners the best.
Travel Could Be A Big Issue For Houston
Both Texas teams find themselves with a disadvantage in regards to travel, because they have the most miles to cover over the course of the 66 days of the schedule. The Rangers and Astros will be first and second in miles traveled this season at 14,706 and 13,954 miles respectively.
In September, 16 of Houston’s 25 games are on the road. While there will likely be no fans and no true home-field advantage for their opponents, the Astros will have to do plenty of travelling down the stretch, with only two off days the entire month.
There are story lines aplenty in this shortened 2020 season. Anything can happen in this 60 game schedule. In fact, one thing will prove certain this year; there will be no shortage of chaos.
