Mike Napoli Signs Minor-League Contract With the Cleveland Indians

According to reports, free agent Mike Napoli signed a minor-league deal with the Cleveland Indians.

Napoli, 36, played in 124 games this season. He had a batting average of .193, had an on-base percentage of .285, and had a slugging percentage of .428. Napoli had 29 homers, drove in 66 runs, 11 doubles, one triple, and struck out 163 times.

Mike Napoli had a WAR of -0.4, and has a WAR of 27.2 throughout his whole career. This season was rough compared to his 2016 campaign with the Cleveland Indians. Napoli had a batting average of .239, hit 34 homers and drove in 101 runs through 150 games. When he was with the Texas Rangers he saw his RBI total and his batting average majorly decrease.

Napoli drove in 35 fewer runs this season with Texas, had his batting average drop by .046 points, and hit five fewer home runs.

Napoli has spent 12 seasons in the majors. He spent five years with the Los Angeles Angels, four years with the Rangers, three years with the Boston Red Sox, and one year with the Indians.

In his 12 year career, Napoli has played in 1,392 games. He has hit .246/.346/.475 in his career, with 267 home runs, 744 runs batted in, 224 doubles, and 11 triples. The right-handed hitter has 1,468 strikeouts in his career though and averages a little over one strikeout per game. Napoli started his career as a catcher before moving to first base and has most recently spent time as a first baseman and designated hitter. He has some experience in the outfield too, playing 11 games in left field with the Rangers in 2015.

Napoli made his debut on May 4, 2006, with the Los Angeles Angels. He made the All-Star team in 2012 and is a one-time World Series champion when he was with the Red Sox in 2013.

The right-handed hitter has played in one American League Wild Card Game, seven ALDS series, four ALCS, and three World Series. In total, Napoli has played in 66 playoff games and has hit .228/.322/.396, has nine doubles, eight home runs, and drove in 30 runs.

Napoli has a fielding percentage of .990 and a fielding percentage of .991 at first base through 678 games.
