Seattle Mariners Trade For Robert Whalen and Max Povse
The Seattle Mariners made another trade, and Jerry Dipoto is at it again. This time, he is bringing in some pitching. He sent Alex Jackson and a player to be named later to the Atlanta Braves for Robert Whalen and Max Povse, both right handed pitchers.
Jackson, 20, was the Mariners 2014 first round pick (sixth overall) but in his three seasons with the Mariners he was only able to amass a .233 BA, 95 runs scored, 21 home runs, and 109 RBI. He showed flashes of brilliance at times last year, but what was supposed to be a power bat never really flourished in the farm system.
Whalen split time between Double-A Mississippi and the Braves MLB team. Whalen went 1-2 with a 6.57 in five starts for the often patch work team that the Braves were last year. He was originally drafted in the 12th round of the 2012 draft by the Mets. Since 2012, he has appeared in 66 games, 62 of them starts. He figures to have a shot at an already depleted pitching depth chart for the Mariners.
Povse could be the most interesting piece of this deal. He spent all last year in the Minors, but at 6-8 and 250lbs, he is an absolute beast. In 26 starts last year between High-A and Double-A, he went 9-6 with a 3.36 ERA. He held opponents to a .250 average and struck out a career high 139 batters, walking only 29. He was a third round selection of the Braves in the 2014 draft. Bringing in these two players gives the Mariners a little more depth with some promising upside.
With it not even being December yet, and Dipoto already saying he will be active during the winter meetings, it is shaping up to be an interesting off-season in the Pacific Northwest.
