Maxxine Dupri shocked Becky Lynch, the crowd at Madison Square Garden, and the millions watching at home when she defeated Becky Lynch to claim the Women’s Intercontinental Championship. Dupri matched the champ move for move in the ring but it was the return of AJ Lee that ultimately led to Lynch’s downfall as she allowed her current rival to distract her, costing her the match.
Maxxine Dupri is the New Women’s Intercontinental Champion
In front of her friends and family, Maxxine Dupri entered Madison Square Garden with her eyes on achieving a monumental upset. Dupri acknowledged she had wished she had more time to prepare for her title match but she wasn’t going to let the opportunity pass her by.
Dupri came out hot, taking down Lynch with a big boot early and a quick nearfall. In fact, it was all Dupri in the early going as Lynch was off-kilter for a bit. Dupri climbed to the top but no, Lynch pulled her down off the ring post and charged Dupri in the other corner until Jessika Carr pulled her off. Lynch had words with Carr as Dupri rolled to the outside.
As the match returned from commercial, it was Lynch in charge until Dupri rallied as the fireflies came out in force. Dupri got anotjer nearfall following a big boot to Lynch’s head. Dupri then hit a suplex and kip up, before pulling down her shoulder strap and getting the crowd to rally behind her. She got a nearfall with a legdrop but Lynch scrambled out and took over briefly. Dupri regained the edge, pounding Lynch in the corner before Lynch pulled her off the ropes to hit the pop up powerbomb. Dupri kicked out but Lynch quickly locked in the Disarmher. Dupri managed to bridge out briefly and then reversed the move for a nearfall of her own. She locked in the Ankle Lock, pulling Lynch back to the middle before she could get the rope break and then dropped down for the extra leverage. Lynch managed to fight out and hit the Manhandle Slam but Dupri got her foot on the rope. Lynch rolled Dupri to the outside and demanded Carr start the count. As she did, Lynch began to undo the turnbuckle pad and as it turned out, led to her own downfall.
Lynch’s attempt to cheat brought out AJ Lee, who made her Raw return for the first time since her and Punk defeated Lynch and Seth Rollins at Wrestlepalooza in September. Lee skipped up the ramp as Lynch taunted her. All the while, Dupri climbed to the top rope and took out Lynch with a crossbody. A few seconds later, Dupri’s hand was being raised as the new Intercontinental Champion as Lynch looked on shocked and then incensed. Dupri ran to hug Lee and the two celebrated as Lynch was stunned in the ring.
It seemed like they may have been setting up for Lee to take the title off Lynch but this feels just as satisfying. The ascendance of Dupri has been a great story and while there is still work to be done there, Dupri aligning with Lee makes sense. And clearly, things are just getting started being Lynch and Lee as the two carry forth the feud their husbands would have been embroiled in if not for Rollins’ injury.
