Rey Fenix had been paired with Andrade since the summer. The two won a number one contender match for the WWE Tag Team titles, but failed to win the titles due to a DQ. Then, they lost in a six-pack tables, ladders, and chairs match at SummerSlam. They were due for a title opportunity at Clash in Paris, but they were suddenly taken off television. It was later reported that WWE had released Andrade, leaving Fenix without a tag team partner.
On October 3, 2025, episode of Friday Night SmackDown, he returned to the tag team division with Je’Von Evans. They took care of Los Garza in an exciting match. The two men worked well together, showing off their talents as a team. It may have only been one match, but they should definitely be a pairing moving forward, or whenever Evans gets an official call-up.
Fenix is Experienced in Tag Team Competition
For people who knew of Rey Fenix before he came to WWE, they know how much tag team wrestling means to him. His brother Penta, who is on Raw, has tagged with him for many years. They won the AEW World Tag Team Championship once, the AAA World Tag Team Championship twice, and the MLW World Tag Team Championship once. The Lucha Brothers are synonymous with tag team wrestling outside of WWE.

It’s clear WWE sees him as a tag team star, as he was due for big things before Andrade’s release. If this pairing is something moving forward, it will solidify him as a tag team star before inevitably reuniting The Lucha Brothers. It will also give Evans a veteran to work with as he makes his way onto the main roster. Pairing them together will help the WWE audience get acclimated to Fenix in a tag team.
Evans Deserves to Shine on the Main Roster
WWE is no stranger to spotlighting NXT wrestlers on the main roster before an official call up. It’s a way to get the main roster audience familiar with someone before they leave NXT. Evans has had several matches on SmackDown so far, including a nice match against Sami Zayn for the United States Championship two weeks ago.
At 21 years of age, his NXT resume is quickly building in an unbelievable way. Whenever he gets called up, he should get paired with Fenix. Both are athletic, fast, and high-flyers. Fenix is also a twenty year veteran and someone he can learn from. Veteran and young wrestler pairings help get the young wrestler over while giving them knowledge from the veteran. The endgame will definitely be The Lucha Brothers reuniting, so Evans pairing with Fenix in the meantime will help him improve even more.
This Pairing Should Be a Permanent One
Fenix and Evans have shown a ton of potential as a tag team, even though it’s been one night. They actually tagged together back in May against Los Garza in a losing effort. This time, they won while working together and building off of each other’s strength. Evans hasn’t gotten a confirmed call up yet and might not for quite a while. But when the time comes, this pairing should definitely be revisited.
WWE knows the hype around Fenix as a tag team wrestler, so they’re trying him with Evans until him and Penta can reunite. An immediate pairing with a veteran can set Evans up for even more success in WWE. He can learn from someone with decades of experience in the business. Fenix and Evans should definitely be a tag team moving forward as it will help both of them in the long run.
