The May 9th, 2025, edition of WWE SmackDown will be the final stop before WWE Backlash St. Louis this Saturday night, and it’s truly a packed show. If you don’t believe us, that’s all right. We have a full WWE SmackDown preview to get you up to speed on everything you should not be missing ahead of this Saturday’s PLE.
Without further ado, let’s run it down.
WWE SmackDown Preview & Match Card (5/9/25):
- Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena Returns to SmackDown
- #1 Contender’s Match – WWE Women’s Championship: Jade Cargill vs. Nia Jax
- LA Knight & Damian Priest vs. Jacob Fatu & Solo Sikoa
Calm Before the Storm
On the first SmackDown after WWE WrestleMania 41, Jade Cargill immediately called her shot against Tiffany Stratton and the WWE Women’s Championship. The two superstars would then face off to prove who the best woman is in WWE. Unfortunately, Naomi, then eventually, Nia Jax would stop proceedings before Stratton and Cargill could settle the score.
A lot happened after that, seeing three women jockey for position to be Stratton’s number one contender. On the latest edition of WWE SmackDown, we may finally have our answer. It’s the battle of the beasts as Nia Jax and Jade Cargill go to war to crown the rightful challenger of Tiffany Stratton.
Both competitors rule the WWE women’s division in terms of strength. But there can only be one to challenge for the gold. Who will come out on top and book their ticket to a WWE Women’s Championship Match?
The Last “Real Champion’s” Final Words
On last week’s WWE SmackDown, Randy Orton kept it short and sweet; he wants Cena’s head on a silver platter as well as the Undisputed WWE Championship. Ever since the Raw after WWE WrestleMania 41, these two have traded jabs and physical shots, rekindling their nearly 20-year rivalry.
John Cena is only here to keep up appearances and plans on walking away once his obligations are fulfilled, preferably as the “real champion” of WWE. Last week, Orton made it explicitly clear that Cena has awakened something inside him that hasn’t been brought out in a long time.
That said, if it means keeping the promotion, industry, and the Orton family name safe, he’s willing to listen to the voices in his head and cut the John Cena Retirement tour short. This week, the Undisputed WWE Champion has something to say ahead of his showdown with his arch-nemesis for the championship.
What does John Cena have to say to the WWE Universe before WWE Backlash St. Louis?
That’s all for the WWE SmackDown preview for May 9th, 2025.
What did you think of this WWE SmackDown preview? Are you excited for this week’s show and WWE Backlash St. Louis?
