AEW Announces AEW Grand Slam: Mexico

AEW Announces AEW Grand Slam: Mexico

On April 16, AEW announced that the company will bring its flagship program, Dynamite, to the historic wrestling venue, Arena México, in Mexico City for AEW Grand Slam: Mexico. In partnership with CMLL, AEW is not only making history for itself with its first show in Mexico. It will also be the first time in 59 years that an American wrestling company has held a wrestling event at the legendary Lucha Libre venue.

This will also be the first time a promotion outside of CMLL has aired a live show from the venue. The last time WWE held a TV taping in Mexico City was 2011. WWE held Raw and SmackDown tapings in Mexico City’s Palacio de los Deportes.

Other promotions have also filmed shows in Mexico, including TNA Wrestling and MLW. Other than CMLL, the last promotion to run Arena México was Ultimo Dragon’s Toryumon Mexico show in 2019.

AEW has already named the show AEW Grand Slam: Mexico City. Tickets will go on sale Saturday, April 26, at 10 AM CST (Central Standard Time) and will be available through AEWTix.com and Ticketmaster.com.mx. This special edition of Dynamite will be broadcast on TBS, Fox Sports Mexico, and livestreamed on Max.

The poster showcases Will Ospreay and Kenny Omega, as well as AEW lucha wrestlers Kommander and Hologram. Also featured are CMLL’s own Mistico and Mascara Dorada. This suggests that AEW will use CMLL wrestlers for the show.

Also, this Dynamite takes place before CMLLxNJPW’s FantasticaMania Mexico on June 20th. It seems likely some AEW may also be used on the show.

Two Days of Big Announcements

This announcement comes one day after AEW revealed details for this year’s Forbidden Door in London. Tony Khan announced on BBC London that this year’s Forbidden Door PPV with NJPW will take place at The O2 Arena on Sunday, 24th August.

Not only this, but Glasgow, Scotland will host Dynamite and Collision tapings at the OVO Hydro on Wednesday, August 20. Tickets for both events go on sale on Friday, May 2.

It is also noticeable that AEW is using the Grand Slam moniker for another international show. After the success of Grand Slam Australia in February, this appears to be a new AEW tradition.
