Commentary greeted viewers with Excalibur sharing that Taz was joining HOOK at the hospital.

Mercedes Mone defeated Athena in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Semi-Final

This dream match started with a physical lock-up. Though Mone held strong, the pair inevitably rolled out of the ring as they countered inside cradles. Athena stunned Mone with a series of kicks and a big elbow strike. Mone swung the match in her favor as she throttled Athena with a Mone Maker that spilled them out of the ring. Once returned to the ring, Mone mocked the ROH champion with her dance before stomping her as she dangled, trapped in the ropes. Athena sent Mone careening into the commentary with a tope. Mone landed a gnarly Statement Maker and a couple of DDTs but couldn’t put Athena away.

Athena landed an impressive Death Valley Driver. Mone sent Athena stumbling to the apron with a double knee strike. Hoping to send Athena plummeting to the outside, she instead got stomped while the ROH champion clung to the ropes. Clenching the TBS Champion with a Crossface, Athena instead suffered one by Mone courtesy of a smooth transition. A Shotgun Dropkick slammed Mone into a nearby LED barricade, sending it into static. Mone transitioned an O-Bomb into a jackknife pinfall for the win.

Post-match, Toni Storm applauded Mone from the rafters.

Exceeded all expectations. Two wrestlers in their element in a strong division in the primes of their careers. It doesn’t get any better than this. Words can’t quite express how generational this match was.

Hangman Page and The Elite backstage segment

Page almost addressed his actions at AEW Dynasty and his upcoming match in the Owen tournament when The Young Bucks and Kazuchika Okada joined him. The Bucks told Page they’d work to help get the Death Riders on their side, but left Page with the choice to accept their help. Okada stuck behind to tell Page to smile before insulting him behind his back.

Hangman Page defeated Josh Alexander in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Quarter-Final

Alexander made his welcome shock debut to a loud ovation. He forewent his usual technical style to match power with Page, soon sending him down with a big boot. Stuck on the barricade, Alexander could only watch as Page dove with a flying lariat from the ramp. Alexander gained some momentum, elbowing Page in the face, only to enrage him. Page retorted with a forceful lariat. Page descended upon Alexander with a Moonsault to the outside, followed by a Ligerbomb back in the ring. Alexander slammed Page before reaching into his bag of submission tricks; his Ankle Lock resulted in a rope break. Page crumpled him with an Inverted Tombstone Piledriver. Hoping for another Ankle Lock, Alexander instead suffered a loss to an inside cradle by Page.

Post-match, Kyle Fletcher tussled with Page as Don Callis spoke to Alexander on the outside. Distracted, Page was laid out courtesy of a bitter Alexander.

This keeps Alexander strong since inside cradles are meant to be a quick, desperate flash attack. That said, what a match! Page’s strengths as a power-based wrestler made the story of Alexander trying to match him on that level before relying on his handy technical style compelling.

The Patriarchy backstage segment

Nick Wayne continued his weekly besmirching of Christian Cage’s name and lack of appearances. Cage approached Wayne, stating that this was the fire he’d been wanting to see in him, which is why he signed him up for NJPW’s Best of the Super Juniors and a ROH Television Championship match against Komander. He then tapped and slapped Wayne’s face and beckoned Kip Sabian and Shayna Wayne.

The Hurt Syndicate (Bobby Lashley & Shelton Benjamin) (c) defeated Gates Of Agony (Bishop Kaun & Toa Liona) for the AEW World Tag Team Championships

Gates of Agony immediately charged at the Syndicate, with Kaun taking on Benjamin. The champ’s enzuigiri stunned Kaun as Lashley charged him with his shoulder. Darting across the ring, Kaun and Benjamin collided, leading Liona to tag in. He then dominated Lashley in the corner with lariats in the corner. Kaun saved Liona from Lashley’s Hurt Lock, which the latter followed up with by slamming the champ into the barricade. Inside, Kaun grappled with Benjamin, but the spry veteran shocked him with a kick and a duology of suplexes. Lashley speared Liona on the outside, leaving Kaun alone in the corner. Lashley folded the defenseless Kaun with a Spear, securing the win.

Post-match, MJF greeted the Syndicate, accidentally insulting Lashley. As a make-good, MJF sent in a legion of women to accompany the Hurt Syndicate. Lashley was not enthused. Benjamin, however, was pleased. Still, he said he’d like MJF’s gold watch as an added incentive. MJF directed his attention to Lashley, remarking that he’s known for getting what he wants. Lashley proceeded to look as though he just watched his car be towed away.

Enjoyable tag team action. This felt less like a WWE-esque squash match and something more akin to a territory match or 90’s AJPW match.

Hurt Syndicate backstage segment

MVP came closer to convincing Lashley to accept MJF’s offer to join them, but Lashley opted to think it over. MVP obliged, responding that they should enjoy the night.

Will Ospreay defeated Konosuke Takeshita in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Semi-Final

Takeshita worked Ospreay’s leg, to which the Aerial Assassin answered with some armwork of his own, followed by a hurricanrana. Takeshita quelled Ospreay’s momentum with a Fireman’s Carry, dropkick, and a tope. Nearly stopped at the top rope, Ospreay crashed Takeshita with a springboard forearm. Firing back with lariats, Takeshita eventually descended to a Stundog Millionaire and an Oscutter. An explosive trading of transitioning moves resulted in another Oscutter with the Boston audience standing on their feet. Takeshita inched closer to a pinfall victory with a bridged suplex and bridged pin attempt.  Takeshita kicked out of a Hidden Blade at the 1-count to rapturous applause. Ospreay slipped on the middle rope to Takeshita, but worked it into the match as though the physicality took a toll on his body. Takeshita sent Ospreay to the mat with a lariat from the top, just to be met with a Hidden Blade. Ospreay countered Takeshita’s Ragin Fire with a hurricanrana + Styles Clash combination. Ospreay ultimately won the match courtesy of a Stormbreaker.

Of course, this was an amazing match. It’s Ospreay and Takeshita we’re talking about. The 1-count became a hype moment, and Ospreay’s professionalism with addressing the botch as part of the story made a load of difference. Two high professionals at the top of their games.

The Opps (Samoa Joe & Katsuyori Shibata) defeat Powerhouse Hobbs vs The Death Riders (c) (Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, & Wheeler Yuta) for the AEW World Trios Championship

The surprise factor of Hobbs dazed Yuta, and Joe followed up with relentless strikes. Shibata followed this with chops to his chest. Castagnoli’s turn to endure Shibata, and he sent the challenger down with a clothesline. The Death Riders cornered Shibata and Hobbs, but the former remained undeterred, withstanding the might of Castagnoli. Joe dropped Yuta with a Scoop Slam but Moxley broke it up and retrieved a chair. Before he could use it, Willow Nightingale struck him with said chair. Moxley attempted to collide with Joe, but ate a lariat instead. The Young Bucks entered, seeking to disrupt the match, but Swerve Strickland ambushed them. Shibata choked out Castagnoli on the ramp and gave him a Penalty Kick. Hobbs slammed Yuta into the commentary table. Marina Shafir struck him with a chair, but he fell with a lariat. Once more in the ring, Joe defeated Moxley with a Coquina Clutch, knocking him out instantly. The Opps are the new AEW World Trios Champions.

Post-match, Strickland, Nightingale, Will Ospreay, Dark Order, Mike Bailey, AR Fox, and Tomohiro Ishii, for some reason, came to celebrate with The Opps. I’ll take it, though, because he’s Ishii.

With all the Death Riders’ shenanigans, they’ve improved in recent months, this was cathartic. The Opps were consistently one of the more exciting groups in AEW before Joe’s kayfabe injury that let him film the new season of Twisted Metal. I’m so freaking happy.

Closing thoughts

AEW fired the cannons tonight, with incredible matches and little amounts of segments. Mercedes Mone and Athena lived up to the hype, while Josh Alexander excited in his debut. The tag match furthered the storyline with MJF instead of dragging it out further. Ospreay and Takeshita wrestled as though they were wrestling for the biggest payday in the Tokyo Dome. For the trios match to end the show, the end had to live up to everything preceding it in the night, and it did.
