Preview: AEW Dynamite (1/22/25)- Hurt Syndicate Go for Gold

In the aftermath of AEW Dynamite Maximum Carnage, there’s wreckage to clear up and space for new developments. Victors from last week will look to make good on two promises they made prior to decimating their victims.

First, to hurt people. Second, claim the AEW World Tag Team Championship.

After “Hangman” Adam Page put an old man out of his misery last week, the returning Samoa Joe plans to kill a child (Nick Wayne) this week. Jamie Hayter wants retribution after Julia Hart blinded her with black mist.

Finally, after clearing away The Don Callis Family, Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay will talk. Can these two rivals agree to a temporary alliance?

Plus, there’s no shortage of possibilities with various other irons in the fire. The road to Grand Slam and Revolution will be paved with blood, sweat, and grit.

On Wednesday, we’ll see clearly.

AEW Dynamite Announced Card:

Matches Announced:

  • Samoa Joe vs. Nick Wayne
  • Julia Hart vs. Jamie Hayter 2
  • AEW World Tag Team Championship: Private Party © vs. Hurt Syndicate
  • Cope vs. PAC

Segments Announced:

  • Will Ospreay and Kenny Omega face-to-face

They Hurt People and Take Championships

There’s a sense of inevitability with this match in the best possible way. Since MVP’s arrival, The Hurt Syndicate has been one of the hottest acts in AEW. Refreshingly, Shelton Benjamin’s matches demonstrate not only his career Renaissance but also showcase his athletic prowess with a brooding charisma. Benjamin has made himself undeniable.

As for Bobby Lashley, The Walking Armageddon hasn’t lost his intensity. Dominant and impressive as always, the team seems ready to take the AEW World Tag Team Championships.

The champions, Private Party, have defended the titles successfully on Collision and PPV but not Dynamite. Although they got some offense last week in their trios tag match, the veteran experience, sharper minds, and power game of Hurt Syndicate scored the win. It’s what’s granted Lashley and Benjamin this title shot.

The upset may be the champions retaining. We could question what type of match this will be.

A one-sided squash? Isiah Kassidy may squeal with wince-inducing cries of agony. Marq Quen may be thrown and splattered across the canvas like silly string.

Can the champions pull off the upset? Well, they overcame the odds to beat The Young Bucks. Anything is possible.

If they do somehow manage, there’s no guarantee they will make it out of the building unbroken.

Banger of the Night: Cope vs. PAC

Some fans are still uncertain about Jon Moxley vs. Cope. While Cope’s microphone work hasn’t won me over yet, in-ring, it feels like Cope’s picked up where he left off with his excellent TNT Championship reign. The prospect Wednesday of these two grizzled, ruthless bastards exchanging blows and doing everything they can to hurt each other could be scintillating.

This is a match between two cold, heartless, calculating personalities. Seeing Cope try to match the aggression and athleticism of PAC is going to be a test. Especially if Cope wants to step up to face the AEW World Champion.

Cope’s desire to have a “grindhouse-style” match with Moxley feels progressively more plausible with each week. The intensity is advancing. Cope is showing his devil-may-care streak.

This will be Cope’s most intense match since his return. It’s likely to be a stiff, bruising, and tearing affair. A perfect proving ground to see if The Rated R-Superstar can cope with Moxley’s world of brutality.
