Why Finn Bálor Needs a Singles WWE Championship

This past Saturday, Gunther put the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on the line against Finn Bálor and Damien Priest at Saturday Night’s Main Event. Gunther successfully retained, but what does that mean for Bálor and Priest now? What’s next?

While we can expect Gunther to have a lengthy championship run, this would have been an essential win for Bálor to have under his belt. Considering his position with The Judgment Day, he could win the championship and create several storylines.

Although the timing may not be right to put the World Heavyweight Championship on Bálor, giving him some singles titles could help his career and bring more stories to the Judgement Day besides just seeing Liv Morgan and Dominik Mysterio. Bálor has always been a fan favorite, but for some reason, he had booking issues before joining The Judgement Day. Bálor and everyone else involved needed the creation of The Judgement Day to help further their careers in WWE, and it worked.

This faction won’t stay together forever, considering their considerable singles talent. So, what will happen to Finn Bálor after The Judgement Day ends?

Is he going to go back to competing in jobber matches? Will they award him a championship and let him show what he can do and impress fans? Does Finn Bálor need a championship to stay relevant in storylines?

Balor’s Championship History

Not many wrestlers can call themselves grand slam champions in the WWE but Finn Bálor is one of them. It may be difficult to recall his Universal Championship run, considering it lasted only 22 hours due to injury. Still, that short championship run made Bálor the first-ever WWE Universal Champion.

It’s hard not to wonder what would have happened if Bálor hadn’t been injured then but, unfortunately, we will never know. There’s a good chance he would have been world champion multiple times by now and definitely would have had a longer title run if he had had the opportunity.

Looking back at Bálor’s career in WWE, champion or not, he was one of the top guys in the company from 2015-2016, from his time in NXT leading to him relinquishing the Universal Championship. He has won titles on the main roster since then, making him a grand slam champion, but the stories haven’t been up to the same caliber. He lost that momentum that he originally had in the company.

Singles Competitor Push

The formation of The Judgement Day helped bring Bálor into more storylines and even tried him as a heel. It provided something new and fresh for him and the fans.

However, the faction is slowly starting to dismantle as it seems to have done its job. The Judgement Day helped every member come into their characters and get put over to the fans.

Putting a singles title on Bálor can help separate him from The Judgement Day and potentially be the ultimate breaking point for the group. The stories could go in any which way. Rumors have it that Liv Morgan could leave with Bálor and, in wrestling, there is nothing like a heel champion couple.

Even though these are just ideas that I’m throwing out there, they can be the start of another significant story among these superstars. The Judgement Day used each other to build each other up as a team; now, it’s time for them to do so as singles competitors. It would be interesting to see Bálor go against Dominik Mysterio or even JD McDonagh instead of Priest because it would bring something new to the audience, something more unpredictable.

Bálor winning a singles championship will push him as a competitor and the people around him. The fans have been behind him since he arrived in the company, and now that he is in a good position, it seems like a perfect time to give him a championship, such as the Intercontinental Championship.
