Preview: WWE Raw Tonight (05/28/23) – Monday Night Raw Card

WWE Raw Tonight - Money in The Bank qualifiers graphic

The week begins. And it comes after a LOADED weekend. New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Best Of The Super Jr’s Finals. IMPACT! Wrestling Under Siege. All Elite Wrestling’s Double Or Nothing. WWE’s Night Of Champions. Which technically did not air during the night for us. But we go back to Mondays now for WWE Raw tonight. Live from the MVP Arena in Albany, New York. Which is sadly not owned by WWE talent MVP. It was however, the home of New Year’s Revolution 2006.

The infamous show that saw the Elimination Chamber match with John Cena taking quite the level of abuse from the likes of Chirs Masters and Carlito only to just beat them suddenly to retain his WWE Championship. Much like we would see in Summerslam 2010 with him and The Nexus. However, it was not the end of the night. As that was the very first time Money In The Bank was ever cashed in. Edge set the tone, with Vince McMahon appearing as a bloody Cena thought he was celebrating to announce Edge’s cash-in and the extra match which ends in less than 3 minutes to give Edge the first of over a dozen World titles.

Seth Rollins’ New World Order

We have our very first new generation World Heavyweight Champion as “The Architect” Seth Rollins was able to defeat “The Phenomenal One” AJ Styles in the opening match of Night Of Champions to win this new version of the World Heavyweight Championship. Not only does this give the oddly dressed “Visionary” his sixth World Championship, but it also gives him a unique distinction. The first person to win three separate versions of a WWE World title. The WWE Championship has existed for 60 years now, the Universal Championship that was first introduced in 2016 and Seth himself had the chance to be the first Champion, and now this new incarnation of the World Heavyweight Championship that does not seem to be a re-activation of the title established in 2002, but instead a new version.

Similar to the 2001 WWE Cruiserweight title that was imported from WCW and the 2016 version made following the Cruiserweight Classic. If you’re wondering why Kane isn’t the first, well WWE didn’t really consider the ECW Championship a World Championship.

Though, it does seem doubtful that Seth will be present tonight as he’s still filming for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Captain America: New World Order.

New Women’s Tag Team Champions

We made a mistake last week, assuming the 4 Way match for the vacant titles were set for last week. They were actually given a rare two-week buffer. Last week saw the setup of who former Champion Raquel Rodriguez’s tag team partner is. It was revealed to be Shotzi. The two team up to face off against perennial challengers Chelsea Green and Sonya Deville. As well as the returning MMA duo of Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler as they make their way back after injury. And finally Damage CTRL’s IYO SKY and Bayley, who cannot get on the same page to win matches.

Road To Money In The Bank

Money In The Bank is our next Premium Live Event, so we need qualifying matches. We don’t have matches announced as of yet, but that will be the theme of the night. Also on the ‘likely to see’ bracket for tonight, Trish Stratus was able to defeat Becky Lynch at Night Of Champions with unexpected help from Raw’s newest superstar, Zoey Stark. Together, they were able to once again injure Becky, seemingly breaking ‘The Man’s’ nose and leaving her bleeding.

Cody Rhodes had a harsh night at Night Of Champions, failing to defeat Brock Lesnar on their sophomore outing as Lesnar made him pass out from pain in the midst of his Kimura submission hold. All that and more on WWE Raw Tonight.
