WWE Speed: New Men’s Champion Crowned at NXT Revenge

There were very few guarantees at NXT Revenge Week Two. But one of them concerned the WWE Speed Men’s Championship. A new champion would emerge from the event, with Lexis King and EK Prosper earning a shot at the vacated title. But who finished the tournament with the gold around their waist?

Both King and Prosper similarly began their WWE Speed campaigns. They ventured into unknown territory against two NXT debutants. King progressed at the expense of WWE ID Men’s Champion Chazz “Starboy” Hall, who pushed the Birthright member all the way. Prosper, meanwhile, felt the full force of Dorian Van Dux. The Belgian import blended heavyweight power with cruiserweight acrobatics, causing Prosper major problems in the first round. But Prosper’s extensive WWE Speed experience won out in the end.

With the title vacated by the injured Elio LeFleur, King and Prosper advanced to a straight shootout for the title. The winner at NXT Revenge would be crowned the new WWE Speed Champion.

A veteran of the brand pitted against a rapidly rising star at NXT Revenge

EK Prosper was hot out of the gates, applying the pressure to a sluggish Lexis King. A Springboard Legdrop almost ended proceedings early, leading King to exit the ring for a reprieve. King was supported by his Birthright stablemates, providing a distraction that turned the tide of momentum early on.

But Prosper showed growth in this tournament final. The Cruiserweight had been in a historic WWE Speed title match before, utilizing his aerial skills to great effect. But against the more calculated King, the young NXT star was more willing to meet the veteran at his level. Prosper was winning the battle in the air and on the ground, but King naturally presented a threat throughout.

As the clock approached the final 90 seconds, both competitors evaded their opponent’s finishers, the orange lights settling over the audience. Time was the new enemy as the opponents traded blows on the apron. After a Moonsault to the outside that flattened the Birthright stable, it looked like Prosper’s title was for the taking. But the numbers game soon played its part.

As Prosper looked to take advantage of a dazed King, his stablemates provided yet another obstruction to the task at hand. It provided just enough time for King to recover and hit a Super Kick followed by a Coronation. Lexis King achieved his crowning moment with just 30 seconds left on the clock.

With the victory, Lexis King became the seventh WWE Speed Men’s Champion, just over two years since Ricochet was crowned the inaugural men’s champion. It was heartbreak again for EK Prosper, who lost another WWE Speed title match. But with the Reality of Wrestling alumnus losing in controversial circumstances, this may not be the end of his rivalry with King and the Birthright.
