Gunther continued his hot streak of dominance at WrestleMania 42: Saturday. The Ring General defeated Seth “Freakin” Rollins via submission, forcing the Visionary to pass out to the Sleeperhold. Although it was an amazing battle, Gunther was merely a footnote in the feud of Rollins/Breakker.
In many ways, Gunther vs. Rollins at Mania was designed to reignite the Visionary’s program with Bron Breakker. As expected, Breakker returned at Mania and nearly broke Rollins in half with a thunderous Spear. On RAW after Mania, the Unpredictable Badass hit a huge Spear on his former mentor, yet again.
Meanwhile, the Career Killer had a chilling backstage confrontation with LA Knight on the same episode. Gunther’s immediate plans might see him lock up with Knight, but his long-term goals remain a mystery. On that note, let’s analyze the Ring General’s fate moving forward in WWE.
Gunther Could Continue His “Career Killer” Gimmick
Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles all fell to Gunther in their final matches. Having retired 3 certified within the last 12 months, the Ring General has established himself as “The Career Killer.” However, the 2-time World Heavyweight Champion might not be done destroying legacies and finishing careers.
Initial WrestleMania plans pointed towards Rey Mysterio battling Gunther. The Ring General had recently retired AJ Styles and had feuded with Dragon Lee. Therefore, an extended program with the Hall of Famer made sense. Although not confirmed, this could have potentially been Mysterio’s final feud as Gunther would have retired the masked legend.
Fortunately, the Master of the 619 is healthy now. He looked great in the Intercontinental Title Ladder match, but Father Time is catching up to Mysterio. Gunther could soon come calling for the masked luchador. The Hall of Famer is one of the most beloved figures in WWE, while the Ring General is transforming into a supervillain.
The Career Killer could kill Mysterio’s career before moving on to other legends. Speaking of other legends, Brock Lesnar left his gloves and boots in the middle of the ring upon losing to Oba Femi at WrestleMania. It appears as if Lesnar has retired from wrestling, but this could be a ruse.
Paul Heyman owes Gunther a massive favor for taking care of Seth “Freakin” Rollins at Mania. The favor could be a match with Lesnar. However, with the Beast retired, the situation has become more intriguing. The Career Killer could belittle and bully Heyman for weeks.
Eventually, the Beast could return to save his friend, setting up a massive dream match at SummerSlam. The Biggest Party of the Summer will be held in Minnesota, a place close to Lesnar’s past. It would be fitting for the Conqueror to retire at SummerSlam, a PLE where he accomplished so much, in front of his most ardent supporters.
The Ring General Sets His Sights on the World Heavyweight Championship
When Roman Reigns won the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 42, the WWE Universe began running down lists of potential challengers. Gunther and Oba Femi’s names were near the top of many lists.
Gunther vs. Roman Reigns is a certified dream match, and WWE has kept the two men distant. They were the finalists of the 2026 Men’s Royal Rumble match, which ended with Reigns tossing out Gunther to win. However, now is the time to cash in on an extended feud between the Ring General and the OTC.
Although he has an insatiable appetite, the Career Killer could temporarily halt his mission of ending careers and shift his focus to bigger goals. Gunther has not held the World Title since losing it to CM Punk at SummerSlam. That may not seem like a long time, but for a man who has spent the majority of his career as champion, it feels like a long time.
Therefore, Gunther could challenge the OTC for the World Heavyweight Championship. SummerSlam would be an appropriate location. We’ve seen the magic Gunther created with Seth Rollins at Mania, and we can expect him to replicate the same with Reigns.
However, it would be intriguing to see how WWE handles a potential championship feud between Reigns and Gunther. The OTC and the Ring General are two of the most protected Superstars on the roster. Neither man can afford to lose such a massive feud, adding a fine layer of intrigue.
