One day before AEW Dynasty, AEW Collision this week offers a stacked night of action, title defenses, and last-minute drama. A satisfying and intriguing card was presented to us on AEW Dynamite.
Some of my earlier predictions were right, while others were wrong. For example, The Hurt Syndicate is returning to action and impressively squashing some fools could be the prelude to seeing who might join the faction. It feels like a lifetime since MJF’s short-lived membership with the group. Part of me wonders if Bobby Lashley will become a world title contender, if Big Hebrew can retain on Sunday?
Anthony Bowens was previously on the group’s radar. Yet the Pride of Wrestling has been eyeing a spot with The Opps. Taking on RUSH this week, another spirited performance could make Bowen’s a more attractive prospect for either. Could we get some faction conflict? With a big stipulation that the winner enters the Casino Gauntlet for the TNT Championship on Sunday in the second spot, expect RUSH to be merciless. Hopefully, Sunday night, AEW learns from past Casino Gauntlet matches to ensure their version of the Royal Rumble does not stagnate.
So much to talk about, and that’s without touching on the two big tag team contests!
Big Title Defences
AEW International champion, Kazuchika Okada, will look to make eight defense against The Rascalz, Myron Reed. If The Rainmaker expects an easy night, then he doesn’t know enough about the relative newcomer to AEW. The Young GOAT has been tearing it up since 2016, progressing from backyard wrestling to MLW and TNA. Trained by one of Okada’s recent title opponents, AR Fox, Reed has not had the same spotlight as teammates Dezmond Xavier and Zachary Wentz.
Yet Reed has made his moments count, including taking out the International champion this past week on Dynamite. Reed is one to watch. Much like when Okada took on Adam Priest back in January, expect this match to be a showcase and a highlight reel of Reed’s capabilities.
Elsewhere, the AEW World Trios Championships will be on the line. JetSpeed and Mistico will take on The Dogs. Clashing last week, David Finlay pointed out they were not pinned on Dynamite. The former NJPW Bullet Club War Dogs have been adjusting to life in AEW. Although their win-loss records do not reflect their former NJPW status, there’s always an adjustment period between switching companies. Overall, the trio has adjusted well.
Having dealt with The Conglomeration, each man has been asserting themselves in singles, tag, and trios action. Clark Connors Tarantino/Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas aesthetic has added to his persona. David Finlay’s smug confidence is clear. Gabe Kidd is starting to assert a character that was previously lacking. Against an impressive and fluid championship unit of Kevin Knight, Speedball Mike Bailey, and Mistico, expect magic. The chemistry between the champions is growing. Expect another banger of a match.
