Chris Benoit stole the show at the WWE Royal Rumble event for the second consecutive year. One year after putting on a true technical wrestling clinic against Kurt Angle for the WWE Championship in 2003, The Rabid Wolverine entered the 2004 Royal Rumble Match first.

He started the match alongside Raw’s Intercontinental Champion Randy Orton, broke Bob Backlund’s 11-year-old longevity record, eliminated six men, and got his hand raised in the end. WWE will never talk about Benoit’s performance at Royal Rumble 2004 for obvious reasons, but this is easily one of the best showings in the history of the event.

What did Chris Benoit do at WrestleMania 20?

While everyone assumed the 2004 Royal Rumble winner Chris Benoit (a SmackDown star at the time) would fight for SmackDown’s WWE Championship at WrestleMania 20, Benoit shocked everyone when he showed up on Monday Night Raw the following night to announce he’d fight for Raw’s World Heavyweight Championship instead.

Benoit would go on to defeat then-champion Triple H and Shawn Michaels in a Triple Threat Match in the main event of WrestleMania XX, winning the title after forcing The Game to tap out to the Crippler Crossface submission.
