John Cena has taken part in a plethora of memorable matches throughout his legendary WWE career. While critics often questioned his in-ring abilities during his prime, Cena consistently delivered exceptional performances, proving his abilities, and has built one of the most impressive match libraries in WWE history.
As WWE’s top star and main event fixture for over a decade, Cena competed in countless high-profile contests. Facing the Cenation Leader has always been a career-defining opportunity for any wrestler, with Cena’s ability to elevate opponents resulting in multiple wrestlers having their career-best performances against him. As Cena’s career reaches its conclusion against Gunther on December 13 at Saturday Night’s Main Event, let’s have a look at five wrestlers who had their best WWE match against John Cena.
JBL (Judgment Day 2005)
JBL was an integral part of John Cena’s career, as he was Cena’s first major rival, and also the wrestler from whom Cena won his first WWE World Title, as Cena ended JBL’s record-breaking 280-day reign. While JBL was renowned for his elite trash-talking and heel work, he was rarely associated with five-star classics. However, he had a great match against John Cena, which was easily JBL’s best match ever.
Their encounter at WrestleMania 21, where Cena captured his first WWE Championship, was pretty basic. They heavily upgraded in their rematch at Judgement Day 2005. It was an extremely brutal “I Quit” match, where Cena bled profusely throughout the bout. The bout came to an end when JBL finally uttered the words “I Quit” after Cena threatened him with a massive metal exhaust pipe, capping off one of the most violent fights in WWE history.

Umaga (Royal Rumble 2007)
Umaga was booked as an unstoppable monster during his WWE run. While he never quite reached the main-event heights his potential suggested, he still had a memorable career. Throughout his tenure, Umaga delivered several hard-hitting performances. His career-defining match happened at the Royal Rumble 2007 against John Cena.
Cena put his WWE Title on the line against The Samoan Bulldozer in a Last Man Standing match, and the two competitors delivered an absolute war. It was a brutal match with both men inflicting tremendous punishment on each other. Cena managed to retain his WWE Championship after an exhausting battle, but it was a breathtaking performance by Umaga.
CM Punk (Money In The Bank 2011)
CM Punk has delivered countless memorable rivalries and matches throughout his illustrious career, but his greatest rival remains John Cena. The two wrestlers consistently brought the best out of each other, both on the microphone and in the ring. Their rivalry has produced several classics through the years, including a recent showdown at Night of Champions 2025 as part of Cena’s retirement tour.
However, their definitive encounter remains the legendary Money in the Bank 2011 match in Punk’s hometown of Chicago. The two men told an amazing story in the ring, with the atmosphere and the tension in the air making the clash absolutely perfect. CM Punk blowing a kiss goodbye to Vince McMahon with the WWE Championship was an iconic moment, and this match was arguably the career-best performance from both wrestlers.
Daniel Bryan (SummerSlam 2013)
Daniel Bryan had already established himself as one of the best technical wrestlers of the 2000s before signing with WWE in 2010. His arrival opened the floodgates for numerous dream matches that fans were dying to see. One of those dream matches was a match between Bryan and WWE’s Franchise Player, John Cena, and the two finally collided in the main event of SummerSlam 2013 with the WWE Championship on the line.
Cena entered the match with an injured elbow, which Bryan smartly targeted throughout the encounter. Despite the injury, Cena delivered an amazing performance, and so did Bryan, resulting in a technical wrestling masterpiece. Bryan won the match after delivering a Running Knee on Cena, capturing the WWE Championship for the first time. Even though a Money in the Bank cash-in from Randy Orton crashed his celebrations, The American Dragon left the building as an absolute superstar, thanks to John Cena.
AJ Styles (SummerSlam 2016)
A match between John Cena and AJ Styles was a dream match for wrestling fans long before The Phenomenal One signed with WWE. A clash between TNA’s top star and WWE’s franchise player represented the ultimate fantasy booking. When Styles finally arrived in WWE in 2016, the dream match materialized immediately as the two locked horns in an instant rivalry. They wrestled each other for the first time at Money in the Bank 2016, where Styles won with help from his friends, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson.
They’d have a rematch at SummerSlam and delivered an instant classic at the event. The bout had a big match feel to it, featuring awesome storytelling with dramatic near-falls. Styles would finally put away Cena after hitting him with a Styles Clash and a Phenomenal Forearm. AJ Styles has wrestled plenty of great matches in WWE, including more classics with Cena, too, but his SummerSlam 2016 match against Cena remains his best WWE match.
