AEW Women’s Tag Team Champions: 5 Teams Who Could Be Inaugural Holders

The time has finally come! As announced by Tony Khan on the September 24th, 2025 edition of Dynamite, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) will be introducing the AEW Women’s Tag Team Championships to the division. This comes at a time when the Women’s Division in AEW is booming. It also adds more intrigue to the company for a time, as everyone’s interested in seeing who the first champions will be. Today, we are going to go over five likely teams who can become the inaugural champions, and why.

5. Penelope Ford and Megan Bayne

One team in the running is Penelope Ford and Megan Bayne. It’s safe to say Penelope Ford’s alliance with Megan Bayne has revitalized Ford’s career, while also reigniting the Women’s Division. Ford and Bayne have been a team for a few months now. In the few months they’ve been a team, fans have been loving it.

Bayne is a good worker with an enormous in-ring presence, while Ford is a good talker and can adapt to many different styles of wrestling. They complement each other very well, not only with their work, but in size as well. Ford’s speed and flexibility with Bayne’s strength and dominance is a dangerous combination.

Even though Ford is versatile in the ring, her offense can feel relatively lackluster sometimes. In comparison, Bayne doesn’t have much experience in talking. While some people like the “quiet giant” role, the first must be all-rounders. People who are great workers and talkers. Although they hide each other’s weaknesses to an extent, pushing them into the big light so quickly can expose that. AEW should use this tournament as a way to work on Ford’s in-ring ability, as well as Bayne becoming more comfortable on the microphone.

So then even if they do lose in the tournament, they can still be legitimate contenders afterwards, while also improving weaknesses they have. If they use this strategy during the tournament, Ford and Bayne will capture the AEW Women’s Tag Team Championships in no time.

4. Toni Storm and Mina Shirakawa

AEW fans absolutely adore Toni Storm and Mina Shirakawa. Not only are they both great in the ring, their character work, particularly Storm’s, is some of the best in the industry right now. After her loss to Kris Statlander at All Out, this tournament would be a great way to reintroduce Toni Storm to the Women’s Division.

Both women have proven they can be intriguing, strong, and legitimate champions, and will also take time to curate their matches and characters. This sort of care from these women is something the first champions need to possess.

However, the likelihood of this team even being in the tournament is low. First, Shirakawa is currently busy in the Ring of Honor (ROH). She is the current interim ROH Women’s World Television Champion. Meaning, she is a placeholder champion until the recognized champion, Red Velvet, returns from injury.

Once Red Velvet returns, she will face Mina Shirakawa to determine the new champion. Depending on when Velvet returns, this could interfere with the tournament. For Storm, she may want (or need) a small break from wrestling. Storm is coming off an incredible Women’s World Championship reign, as well as a year-long feud with Mariah May.

Storm not only may need, but deserves a vacation. By taking some time away, Storm can heal physically and also avoid any burnout she may be feeling at this time. Although this team would make an excellent choice as inaugural AEW Women’s Tag Team Champions, other commitments may prevent this.

3. Athena and Billie Starkz

Athena has garnered a high reputation since joining AEW/ROH. She has put on high-quality matches, reached incredible milestones, and amassed a group of highly loyal minions. One of these minions is Billie Starkz. Athena and Billie’s chemistry is off the charts. Their character work, alongside their own in-ring talents and unique styles, is nothing short of perfection.

Which is why many fans want to see them become the first-ever AEW Women’s Tag Team Champions. Moreover, both Athena and Billie have proved they are ready for a stage bigger than ROH. ROH is known for its history, prestige, and the world-renowned wrestlers who’ve come out of there, but it’s not as popular.

ROH, unfortunately, still has an issue being in AEW’s shadow, ever since Tony Khan bought the promotion in 2022. While there’s nothing wrong with the two working alongside each other, or ROH being an AEW developmental, the brand feels like an afterthought.

Anyhow, Athena and Billie being crowned champions could also be beneficial for the future. At only 20 years old, Billie Starkz is undeniably the future of AEW. By putting the championships on them, AEW can promote younger talent, which many fans across the industry have been waiting for.

Additionally, Billie can be primed for bigger singles championships down the line through this reign, such as the TBS Title or even the ROH Women’s Championship. Unfortunately, Athena may not be back in time for the tournament. As reported, Athena has been taking some time away from the ring. Hopefully, she will be back in time to represent ROH in the tournament, and maybe even win.

2. TayJay (Anna Jay and Tay Melo)

Anna Jay and Tay Melo made something obvious on the September 27th, 2025, episode of Collision. They’re determined to become AEW’s first-ever Women’s Tag Team Champions. In the backstage interview, Melo said,

“We did it all, we did it together, we are AEW’s original tag team.”

Which is true. TayJay has more history as a team than any other on this list. They debuted as a team in 2020 and have been fighting for these titles since. It seems only right that they become the first. Also, both women have improved tremendously in the ring. In August of last year, Anna Jay did a brief tour in Japan, competing in the STARDOM 5 Star Grand Prix.

Although her time there was short, she learned a lot. Now she is among some of the better female wrestlers in AEW, improving every match. In early 2025, Tay Melo returned to wrestling after her pregnancy and hasn’t missed a step. Furthermore, neither woman has won a championship in AEW, making this win all the more significant if they pull it off.

The Seemingly Perfect Choice Has A Problem

The only thing holding them back is relatability and timing. Although this changes depending on who you ask, to me, Anna and Tay aren’t relatable. TayJay are faces, and a big part of playing “the good guys” is being relatable or heroic. One thing comes to mind to combat this, though. Have Anna and Tay pull off underdog victories, winning by tooth and nail until they reach the finals.

Then, have them lose. Since TayJay got screwed out of their epic and emotional win, it will give them motivation to go after the titles again, and have fans stay tuned to see. They can then continue the underdog narrative into the next feud, making their eventual win more satisfying. For TayJay, it’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when the right time to put gold on them will be.

1. The Triangle of Madness (Julia Hart, Skye Blue, and Thekla)

The Triangle of Madness is one of AEW’s most popular stables. Due to their unique look, versatility, and strong booking as a team, The Triangle of Madness is the most likely to come out on top. Julia Hart and Skye Blue, in particular, have an immense history as a team, debuting in 2023. After the House of Black (renamed Hounds of Hell) was disbanded in 2025, Julia Hart reunited with Skye Blue to form the group alongside Thekla.

However, some fans question if this is the right move, due to the Freebird Rule. The Freebird allows all members of a unit or stable to be recognized as champions. It is unclear where AEW stands on this rule.

While some don’t mind it, others feel the Freebird Rule should not apply. A way to avoid outcry is to have Julia and Skye win the AEW Women’s Tag Team Championships, and have Thekla go on to challenge and dethrone Mercedes Mone for the TBS Title. By doing this, we get traditional tag team champions and add strength to the stable. It would put The Triangle of Madness in the running for one of the most dominant stables in wrestling, and put more eyes on the Women’s Division as a whole.
