Women's Tag Team Championship match graphic for WWE Evolution

Why a Fatal Four-Way Tag Team Match is the Best Option for WWE Evolution

It seemed Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez were destined to defend their women’s tag title gold at WWE Evolution, perhaps in a match against the Bella Twins, which had started to be teased. Aside from a brief switch on Night 2 of WrestleMania 41, Morgan and Rodriguez have held the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship for the last 123 days.

Unfortunately, Morgan suffered a legitimate shoulder injury, ending that reign and putting the status of the titles and their WWE Evolution match in question. After conferring on Monday, Adam Pearce and Nick Aldis opted not to strip the titles from Morgan and Rodriguez and rather to allow new Judgment Day member Roxanne Perez to fill Morgan’s place at Finn Balor’s suggestion. On one condition, that Perez and Rodriguez would compete at the PLE. A fatal four-way between them and teams from Raw, SmackDown, and NXT was announced on the June 30, 2025 episode of Monday Night Raw. That means that any of the three brands could be home to the next WWE women’s tag team champions. It might be a lot for Perez and Rodriguez to handle, but the match makes sense for a variety of reasons.

Fatal 4-Way the Right Call for WWE Evolution

Each Brand Has an Opportunity to House the Champions

WWE Evolution is the company’s female-only PLE. That means that women from Raw, SmackDown, and NXT, along with legends, will be competing a week from Sunday. Having a fatal four way match featuring all three main brands presents a special opportunity for the competitors. Because while the women’s tag team titles were always designed to be defended across brands, there has been some inequality where that goes. Few NXT teams have gotten the chance to compete for the titles, let alone win them, and for the most part, the titles have remained only defended on the brand where their champions live.

That means if Perez and Rodriguez or the yet-to-be-announced mystery team from Raw win at WWE Evolution, the titles stay primarily on Mondays. But if the team from NXT or the team from SmackDown win, the titles go to either Tuesdays or Fridays respectively. Those teams are at a significant disadvantage in terms of show representation as they only have one team competing as opposed to two for Raw, but those brands have a legitimate chance of changing the primary destination of the tag team titles for the first time in several months. A win by either of the SmackDown or NXT teams will take the women’s tag team titles to a new destination and allow for fresh matchups that haven’t been seen.

Perez and Rodriguez are Guaranteed to Be Tested

The current tag team champions are definitely a bit of an odd couple to say the least. On Monday, Balor suggested to Pearce and Aldis a way for Rodriguez to not lose her title, while also forwarding what seems to be his own agenda to kick Morgan out of Judgment Day. He suggested Perez as the replacement, which the two authority figures agreed was a good idea. However, Rodriguez was not happy at Morgan’s seeming erasure and only begrudgingly accepted her new partner. Not only does she have a partner she didn’t want, but she has a partner she’s never worked with before and one she doesn’t have the same chemistry with that she did with Morgan.

Now, Rodriguez and Perez’ partnership is being given a trial by fire as they have to defend those titles against three other teams at WWE Evolution. Pearce and Aldis wanted the two women to be tested, to prove they were worthy of remaining champs, and it looks like they will get their wish. If Perez and Rodriguez have any chance of winning the match, they’ll have to work together or at the very least work cohesively. Anything less than total communication will result in them losing their tag team titles, especially against more well-oiled teams. They will have their work cut out for them, so they’ll have to work hard for the win.

A Fatal Four-Way Match is a Great Idea

Looking at the WWE Evolution match could have people feeling bad for Perez and Rodriguez but given the events that unfolded on Monday, this is the perfect match to put on Evolution’s card. With teams from Raw, SmackDown, and NXT, there is a chance that the tag team titles could move away from Monday nights. That will allow for new challengers and matches to take place. It’s always a good thing to refresh a title through a title change, and there’s a high probability that could happen. There’s also the current situation with Perez and Rodriguez to consider. They got thrown together out of desperation by their fellow faction member without any input from either of them. This match forces them to work together in order to keep their titles. And if they keep those titles within Judgment Day, it could set up for quite the return if Morgan realizes the group has moved on without her.

No matter what happens at WWE Evolution, the end result will signify change for the women’s tag team division and perhaps send shockwaves throughout the entire company.
