Just Me, Uce
Jey Uso opened Raw entering with the crowd and received an absolute hero’s welcome. Thousands upon thousands of fans yeeting in unison. It’s been building. There is a Daniel Bryan vibe in the air. The question is, will WWE actually pull the trigger and have Uso slay the giant or defeat his former tag team partner at the Show of Shows?
After dapping up the boys (Cole still looks awkward as hell doing it), Uso entered the ring, over 13,000 fans yeeting alongside him and cheering on their Men’s Royal Rumble victor. Uso was energetic, excited, and took in every last bit of his moment alongside the Ohio crowd. Minutes passed before Uso even took the mic to open Raw, but before he could, the fans chanted “one more time” and production made it happen. A hero’s welcome indeed, and one that showed that despite the controversy, WWE made the right decision on Saturday night. As the meeting died down, a “you deserve it” chant picked up and it was clear Uso was emotional and overwhelmed by all of the love and support. But finally, with tears in his eyes, and nearly 15 minutes into Raw, he had a chance to speak. And instead of opening with his usual catchphrase, he got real. Uso told fans he’s been wrestling for nearly 15 years, carrying on the family legacy alongside Jimmy in the tag team division, before moving toward the Bloodline. Both were cool chapters of his career. He wasn’t super confident in himself to be a singles competitor believing he didn’t have it. But he’s got it now. Another “you deserve it” chant rang out before Uso continued, noting how hard he’s worked for this moment and to get to the spot he’s now in. Uso, all choked up, thanked the fans for being with him and believing in him. That because of the fans, he’s the rumble winner, going into the main event of WrestleMania. Main Event Jey Uso was now not just in their city, but he was going to Las Vegas to face the champ of his choosing.
Almost as if on cue, insert the arrival of the Ring General to rain on Uso’s parade. The crowd made their displeasure of Gunther’s interruption known as he announced he came out to offer his congratulations. But in reality, he was disappointed, saying the possible matchup of him vs Uso doesn’t appeal to him. Gunther told Uso he couldn’t even lace his boots. Gunther noted he’s made everyone believe he’s just barely holding on to the title but in reality he’s always in control. Gunther refused to wrestle Uso again saying he had no idea what it meant to hold the championship. Gunther said this was his legacy and beating Uso doesn’t add to his legacy. Gunther reminded Uso of his expectations saying beating John Cena, CM Punk, Roman Reigns, all would have added to his legacy but not Uso. Gunther told Uso not to challenge him, saying if Uso chose him, he’d have to give himself a reason to want the match. Gunther told Uso that every week leading up to WrestleMania would be hell for him and WrestleMania would be the most horrible display of violence in the history of WWE. He told Uso he’d put him down like a diseased dog. If he chose him. Gunther reminded Uso he had options and told him to consider them before attempting to leave the ring. But Uso stopped him saying he was tired of people telling him what he can and can’t be. He told Gunther he’s going to talk to Cody Rhodes on Friday but it was his choice, not Gunther’s who he faced. He’s walking in the Royal Rumble winner but walking out as a champion.
It seems pretty certain we’re running back Uso vs Gunther, but this added a little bit of intrigue to that decision. Sidenote: Michael Cole noted that Uso is the fourth member of the Anoai’i family to win the rumble, following Reigns, Yokozuna, and the Rock. The Bloodline keeps putting up stats and adding to the legacy of the greatest family in pro wrestling history.
Penta vs Ludwig Kaiser – Iron Man vs Mr. Six Seconds
Prior to the match, Kaiser cut a promo during the commercial break complaining about Penta and the special treatment he’d gotten since arriving to WWE, treatment Kaiser never got. Coming back from break, commentary reminded fans of Kaiser’s six-second run in the rumble, which re-aired to the live Cleveland crowd. The crowd was hot for Penta, who ironically enough, was the rumble’s iron man lasting over 42 minutes after entering the match at No. 2. It was the first time in history two wrestlers of Mexican heritage were one and two in the rumble.
Kaiser started laying the boots to Penta, not wasting much time, before Penta got hot and took over the momentum. This was a clash of styles. Ludwig’s hard-hitting ground game against Penta’s lucha prowess. Kaiser promised to embarrass Penta in front of the world before Penta threw Kaiser over the top rope in a callback to Saturday. Incensed, Kaiser regained his composure to counter Penta before hitting a move on the apron. Into the break, Kaiser kept up the momentum despite the crowd clearly being for Penta to Kaiser’s chagrin. The two began punishing each other with hard-hitting slaps and kicks as Kaiser went for Penta’s legs to try to neutralize him. As Raw returned from commercial, Kaiser continued to hold the edge, just attacking his opponent. This led into the first near fall of the match as Penta kicked out in two. Kaiser resumed his assault as Penta egged him on to give him more. Kaiser mocked Penta’s cero miedo, allowing Penta to take over for a near fall of his own. Penta kept up the aggression, hitting a handstand and another near fall. Down on the mat, the two continued with the boo/yay chops before Penta hit the tope con hilo over the top rope onto a dazed Kaiser on the outside. Back in the ring, Penta went on top again for his third near fall. More physicality and kicks ensued from both men along with a series of counters. Kaiser with the rolling senton but Penta kicked out.
After more back and forth, Penta hit the sacrifice on Kaiser leading into the Penta Driver. The move remains undefeated as Penta got the 1-2-3.
Chad Gable, Pete Dunne, Ludwig Kaiser. Penta has been given a series of stellar opponents, all of whom are not just making him look good but reminding fans of their value as well.
After the match, Penta was about to do an interview before he was interrupted by Dunne looking none too happy. As Penta watched Dunne on the ramp, Kaiser took advantage, attacking Penta from behind allowing him to lay out Penta. Seems last week when these two had a little backstage moment that they may have planned something like this.
Backstage with the Judgment Day
Finn Balor returned to the clubhouse, saying everything has fallen apart with him gone over two weeks. He went after Dominik Mysterio saying he stole his rematch and his partner and in the process, it led to JD McDonagh getting hurt. Balor said Mysterio needed a babysitter before Liv Morgan came in to defend Daddy Dom. She told Balor that Mysterio is gonna get her into the Elimination Chamber just like he helped get her and Raquel Rodriguez a tag title match. Oh and he got Balor his own Elimination Chamber qualifying match. Morgan said it was all because of Mysterio but yes, from now on, they’d start listening to Balor again. Like we’ve been saying for weeks, the Judgment Day is totally fine…
All Hail the Queen
Less than one hour into Raw, we saw both the men and women’s Royal Rumble winners. Pretty cool. Charlotte Flair, first woman to win two rumble matches, made her triumphant entrance to the ring. Granted, her heroine’s welcome was not nearly as awe-inspiring or as long as Uso’s, but the crowd was largely anti-Flair. Cole reminded fans of the legend of the No. 27, which across the men and women’s matches has now produced five winners. Though Pat McAfee said the number didn’t matter, all that mattered was being the queen. All of this was during the commercial break but as Raw returned, Flair took the mic and re-introduced herself to the fans.
Flair began by saying a year ago, the boos would have bothered her but she missed the boos, and the cheers. She said 2024 sucked as it broke her mentally and physically. There was a point where she didn’t know if she’d wrestle in 2025. The crowd continued to boo as Flair started to become more annoyed telling the fans they just don’t get it. As Flair pointed out, whether she’s booed or cheered, it doesn’t change the fact that she’s the greatest superstar in the industry. The crowd continued to boo as Flair shared how important coming back for the rumble was and punching her ticket to WrestleMania.
Much like with Uso, Flair was interrupted by Ripley, who was greeted warmly by the fans. Cleveland loves Mami. Flair greeted Ripley, who reminded her that this may have been her moment but Raw was her show. And now it was possible the two of them would go to war once again. Ripley told Flair going to war is when you earn someone’s respect and she does respect her. She told Flair to pick her because last time they wrestled at WrestleMania, she beat her. Flair acknowledged her point but added that the first time they fought at ‘Mania it was she who won. They are all tied up. Ripley told Flair back then she was just a kid. Flair said she didn’t have an answer yet because she was going to go to NXT and see if Guilia inspires her and SmackDown on Friday to see if Stratton inspires her. She said she wants to feel inspired and right now, Ripley isn’t inspiring her. Flair tried to leave but Ripley stopped her, telling her that she doesn’t respect her the way that Ripley respects her. She begs Flair to pick her so that she can beat the respect into her.
It seems likely we are headed toward Flair/Ripley III at WrestleMania, but Flair did shock before when she won the rumble and chose to go after the NXT champion. Any of the three matchups are certainly intriguing.
Sami Zayn, Jey Uso, Karrion Kross
Sami was interviewed about taking on CM Punk for the first time ever. Sami Zayn said it was difficult losing the rumble and losing his momentum, but he had to focus on the qualifying match and beating Punk to get into the chamber. Zayn cut the interview short as he was being asked about Kevin Owens as he ran into Uso. Uso apologized saying he wasn’t trying to eliminate him but Zayn stopped him telling him how happy he was for him. He told him this moment was his and it doesn’t matter, that he was proud of him. Uso wished him luck against Punk. Karrion Kross showed up as Uso left asking what its been like watching everyone else live out his dreams. Zayn said they are going to have a problem if Kross keeps coming up to him. Kross said he’s not trying to be a problem for Zayn but he could be, any time.
New Day vs LwO
New Day was introduced with a new theme song. No more no music entrances. Kinda a bummer. New Day soaked in the boos during the commercial break and cut a promo saying a crime was committed against them this past Saturday. The boos reigned down as the two spoke, saying they never should have been excluded from the rumble. Kofi Kingston reminded the fans no one has given more rumble moments in this business other than him. Not entirely wrong there. Xavier Woods said people who boo the truth are called liars before reminding the crowd that they don’t want to be there and can’t wait to get the hell out just like Myles Garrett. Ah yes, the heel insults the local sports teams and fans bit. Woods said they got their match even though Dragon Lee wanted to be home to be there for his newborn child. Oof, real heel move to point that out.
As the show returned from commercial we saw Ripley and IYO Sky meet backstage. Sky told Ripley she hoped to see her at ‘Mania before Morgan attacked her backstage. Ripley ran in to scare Morgan off before Rodriguez got involved and attacked her. Morgan takes on Sky later in a qualifying match for the Elimination Chamber.
Back to the New Day vs LwO match. LwO made their entrance and this thing got underway with Woods vs Lee. The two started with a lock up as Woods quickly tagged out to Kingston. Kingston and Lee went back and forth with New Day continuing to showcase their newfound brutality. Lee tagged in Mysterio and Woods made a blind tag on Kingston. Woods attacked Mysterio before Mysterio got the upperhand, taking Woods to the ropes and tagging in Lee for a huge kick to the face. A near fall for LwO. Woods tagged Kingston back in, who got Lee to the ropes, hitting a series of rights before Lee caught Kingston hung up on the top rope.
And then, in the middle of it, Logan Paul showed up, allowing New Day to benefit from the distraction. Paul received a hometown welcome, which was the same as his normal welcomes, just a series of boos. Mysterio was thrown into the barricade by Woods as Kingston took advantage in the ring against Lee.Woods ripped off a piece of Lee’s mask and put it in his pants, making fun of the luchador. Woods distracted the ref as Kingston took advantage with some cheap kicks. The crowd chanted something that had be bleeped out as he said this is why he left. It’s a city of average and they don’t respect greatness because no one there is great on WWE Raw tonight.
Back in the ring, New Day really took over but the crowd didn’t really care much for the match. They just wanted to boo Paul. Woods had Lee up in the vertical suplex before getting him in a hold in the middle of the ring. Woods and Kingston continued to maintain control with a huge spot on the apron. Kingston then went off the top rope and got a near fall. Woods tagged in as Lee remained isolated. Woods taunted but Lee was resilient and fought back, reversing Woods off the ropes into a sit out powerbomb. The crowd got back involved as the hot tags happened with Mysterio coming in hot on Kingston. After a series of quick maneuvers, Mysterio got Kingston lined up for the 619, but Woods made the save. Mysterio and Paul engaged on the outside as Mysterio and Lee had some incredible spots on and off the apron. Back in the ring, Paul pulled Mysterio out of the ring, unseen by the officials.
This gave Kingston the opportunity for the Trouble in Paradise and the 1-2-3, assisted by Paul.
A highlight package or Rollins, Reigns, and Punk’s eliminations showed along with the post-match beatdown Reigns endured at the hands of his greatest rival. Cole said there was an update on Reigns, saying he believes he will be out for the foreseeable future. AKA, taking a break before returning for ‘Mania to finally take down his greatest enemy.
CM Punk
Backstage, Punk was interviewed as he took credit for Rollins and Reigns not winning the rumble. He said he has goals and has to make it to WrestleMania. He may have put too much pressure on himself to win the rumble but in the chamber, which he’s won before, the pressure was on everyone else. He apologized to Zayn fans, saying it wasn’t going to be him going to the chamber, it was going to be Punk winning WWE Raw tonight.
IYO Sky vs Liv Morgan
Before the match, during the commercial break, Jackie Redmond caught up with Alpha Academy. Maxxine Dupri told Redmond that they took a long look in the mirror and she responded by eliminating Ivy Nile from the match. A Town Down showed up to taunt Dupri, the crowd, Redmond, the Academy, pretty much everyone. They said Redmond should be talking to them, the biggest stars on Raw. Otis and Austin Theory squared up before Grayson Waller said they were lucky that A Town Down Under doesn’t do business in Cleveland for WWE Raw tonight.
A video package aired of Bron Breakker’s spear heard round the world on IShowSpeed, which was the most-watched WWE social post of all time. Another video package hyped up Lyra Valkyria taking on Bayley next week in an EC qualifier. Both were shown seated ringside. Returning from commercial, Morgan made her entrance where Sky was already in the ring, favoring her shoulder.
Cole reminded fans Morgan and Sky entered the rumble one and two, both lasting over one hour before being eliminated by Nia Jax. As the match started, Morgan immediately took it to the outside. Sky threw Morgan into the barricades and the apron before getting things back in the ring. Sky continued the early advantage with a series of boots and rights to Morgan but Morgan quickly fought back getting an early near fall. Morgan kept the advantage with a big double dropkick to Sky before another near fall. The two continued to go back and forth with Sky hitting a dropkick of her own as she got the crowd into it. Morgan threw Sky through the ropes for a brief reprieve but Sky came back, holding her edge. Again, she hyped up the crowd before flying through the ropes to take out Morgan on the outside.
The match continued during the commercial break as Sky rolled Morgan back in the ring. Sky took to the top rope but Morgan dragged her down and grabbed another near fall. Morgan wrapped Sky in the ropes as Rodriguez hit some cheap shots while the ref wasn’t watching. Morgan took some time to play to the crowd and Sky took advantage with a roll-up. Morgan hit the Codebreaker for a near fall of her own before regaining her focus. Another near fall for Morgan as Raw returned from commercial break. Morgan wrapped up Sky, continuing her dominance. Morgan began taking over the match, hitting the Three Amigos a la Eddie Guerrero, but Sky got a huge knee to Morgan. Both women took a moment to recover with Sky getting to her feet first. Sky hit a flurry of offense before climbing to the top rope and hitting a huge dropkick to set up a stomp but Morgan kicked out. Morgan with a Backstabber before Sky hit a Crossface. The action remained fast and furious at this point with both women showcasing their incredible skillset. Sky took to the ropes but a distraction from Rodriguez allowed Morgan to get Sky to the outside. Morgan attempted a Sunset Flip Powerbomb but Sky was wise to it. Again, the action returned outside the ring as Sky hit a German Suplex before getting back on the apron for the Springboard Moonsault. Sky dragged Morgan back in the ring, again climbing to the top rope, but Morgan caught her with a Codebreaker for another huge near fall.
The back and forth continued as the crowd got behind Sky before chanting “this is awesome.” Awesome indeed. Morgan to the top rope, followed by Sky. Sky hit a Hurricanrana on Morgan before landing the Bullet Train in the corner. Sky up to the top but Rodriguez with the distraction allowing Morgan to get the knees up on the moonsault. Sky kept the advantage as Ripley ran in to neutralize Rodriguez. Morgan grabbed Ripley and Ripley punched her in the face leading to a disqualification. Morgan is headed to the chamber after masterfully bating Ripley. Just genius.
Ripley tried to apologize to Sky after the match but Sky walked away.
American Made and the War Raiders
Backstage with War Raiders. The two said last week they gained a level of respect for McDonagh before Chad Gable and American Made interrupted. Gable said the Creed Brothers were going to wrestle circles around them. War Raiders said they might be able to outwrestled them but they wouldn’t be able to win the war. Gable said he needed to go off on a quest to conquer his lucha problem but when he returns, he wants to see American Made draped in gold.
Seth Rollins and Sami Zayn
Seth Rollins made his entrance to an adoring crowd as per usual. The show went to commercial as Rollins soaked in the adulation of the crowd, leading them in singing his theme. Rollins ran around the outside, high-fiving fans before he made his way into the ring with lots to say.
A clip showed of rumble with AJ Styles’ return and highlights from his time in the match. Backstage with Adam Pearce. Pearce made a massive announcement about the transfer window and one final deal. He introduced Styles as the newest member of the Raw roster. Breakker interrupted by telling Pearce to keep Styles away from him. Breakker wanted to know what was next for him and the Intercontinental Championship. He pulled Pearce away to talk business.
Back with Rollins, he welcomed Cleveland to Monday Night Rollins. Rollins started by applauding Uso’s win saying he’s happy for him and proud of him as he likes to see good things happen to good people. He likes to see people get what they deserve which brings him to Punk. Punk lost the Royal Rumble, future with ‘Mania still up in the air. Love to see it, a scumbag, piece of trash, embarrassment get embarrassed by getting dumped by Paul. On to Reigns as the crowd chanted “OTC.” Reigns lost the rumble and may not make it to WrestleMania at all. Rollins said Reigns is hurt but no one is admitting it except him because he’s the one who hurt him. Rollins got booed, probably for the first time in a while. Rollins said for the past four years Reigns has done nothing but hurt those close to him and he would have done the same thing to him if he had the chance. Rollins said Reigns and Heyman talk about their limited schedule so he did him a favor. Rollins moved on to himself, saying he lost the rumble and it hurts but he’s putting that in the past because he sees the different paths to WrestleMania. Rollins says he’s got a qualifying match against Balor but tonight he needs Zayn to take care of business and defeat Punk. Rollins invites Zayn to the ring and Zayn obliges.
Rollins chants Zayn to the ring and hypes him up saying he’s his guy. He tells him its been a tough couple months for the two of them but the future is in front of them. Rollins says the world knows he hates Punk and they are different people who handle things differently. Rollins said the world doesn’t know how much Zayn also hates Punk but Rollins does. He tells Zayn tonight is the fight of his life and after what Punk said saying Zayn wasn’t on his level, that delusional narcissist. Rollins said he is Zayn, a ‘Mania main eventer, and a good person, something Punk will never be. You aren’t on his level, you are levels above him. Rollins said he needs to keep Punk out of the chamber because Zayn deserves it and Punk, who doesn’t care about these people or this company, don’t deserve it. Rollins told Zayn to bury Punk’s dream for good. Rollins was still hyping up Zayn as Punk’s music hit. The two stared each other down on the ramp as they needed security to separate them. Rollins retreated as Punk made his way to the ring.
CM Punk vs Sami Zayn
As Raw went to commercial, Punk stood in the ring and took in the crowd’s support and cheers. Punk pointed to the WrestleMania sign before the competitors were introduced. Both men had the crowd’s support but there were definitely louder reactions for Punk as it seems the fans are behind his journey to a ‘Mania main event. The Punk chants began to ring out and as the show returned from commercial, the match began.
Punk and Zayn locked up, each looking for an early edge. The two continued to feel each other out in the early going, both attempting quick covers. Punk brought things to the mat, locking Zayn in a vice before Zayn reached the ropes to break the hold. Zayn became the aggressor but both men showcased lots of physicality and toughness early on. It was a real power game in the early going as both men showed their strength moreso than anything else. Zayn got Punk to the ropes and just unleashed on him as Punk covered up in the corner much like one would in an MMA fight. Punk was able to heat up with a clothesline as he and Zayn exchanged a series of moves. The crowd got behind Punk, who was methodical as he got to the top rope. Before Punk could attack, Zayn took him off the ropes and brought Punk up for a Superplex. Both men were down as the show went to another commercial break.
Zayn was the first to his feet as he climbed the top rope, But Punk was quick to follow and the two exchanged a series of strikes on the ropes. Zayn hit Punk hard, knocking him off the ropes before attempting a huge move that Punk caught for a near fall. From there, Punk took advantage as the two engaged in back-and-forth attacks under the sound of dueling chants from the crowd. Both men were relatively even at this point, utilizing similar moves and counters. Both men down on the mat again as the ground game continued for both. Zayn with a huge Tornado DDT but Punk was out of position for a pin. Zayn held his elbow with a quick official’s check but Zayn pushed him away. Punk and Zayn in succession, both attempted their finishers but both were stopped. Punk attempted a bulldog but no, Zayn countered into a Blue Thunderbomb for the near fall.
More “this is awesome” chants as Punk continues to work on Zayn’s injured arm. Zayn sent Punk shoulder first into the post, attempting the Helluva Kick but no, Punk countered into a roll-up. Near fall. Punk with a submission hold on Zayn in the middle of the ring but Zayn managed to drag himself to the ropes. The damage is done though as Zayn looks spent. Alternating chants from the crowd. Punk with more knees to Zayn to set up the GTS. He tells Zayn to look at the ‘Mania sign and says he’s not on his level. Zayn with the Helluva, but no Punk moves out of the way. Sets up the GTS, but no, Zayn into the small package. Punk just barely kicks out. Punk points at the sign again as he and Zayn engage in a fist fight. Punk draws Zayn in, attempts GTS, but no, Zayn counters and gets Punk into the corner with the exploder to set up the Helluva Kick. But Punk counters into a GTS and it’s over. Punk is headed to the Elimination Chamber.
Another fantastic chamber qualifying match for two guys who have never wrestled one-on-one before. If this is any indication of the matches we’ll be getting over the next few weeks, this road to the chamber is going to be fantastic.
After the match ended, Punk and Zayn shook hands in a show of respect before Owens returned to attack Zayn. Who didn’t see that coming after Zayn didn’t help Zayn win at the rumble? Owens hit Zayn with a Package Piledriver as the credits rolled.
