#AndNEW: Athena Becomes Ring of Honor Women’s World Champion

Athena Wins ROH Women's Championship

Athena is the new Ring of Honor (ROH) Women’s World Champion. She defeated Mercedes Martinez at Final Battle to become champion, as Ring of Honor closes out 2022 tonight.

Athena Captures ROH Women’s World Championship at Final Battle

This feud quickly became personal. Athena has shown a darker and more aggressive side to herself over the past couple of months in AEW. Things came to a head when Athena attacked Madison Rayne after defeating her in a match on Rampage. Referee Aubrey Edwards also found herself on the receiving end of an attack from Athena. Mercedes Martinez made her return to AEW following this assault and confronted Athena, setting up this match.

The match was physical and hard-hitting as both competitors left it all in the ring. The match ended with Martinez being tossed into the corner with an exposed turnbuckle pad hitting the back of her head. This allowed Athena to hit her finisher and win the ROH Women’s World Championship. This ender Martinez’s reign at five successful defenses of the title. Many of which took place in an AEW ring.  She defeated Deonna Purrazzo to unify the Women’s and Interim Women’s Championship on AEW Dynamite back in May of this year.

Athena adds the ROH Women’s World Championship to her resume tonight. She is a former NXT Women’s Champion and NXT Women’s Tag Team Champion and is the current Warrior Wrestling Women’s Champion. The ROH Women’s Division has been put on notice and should make for an interesting 2023 inside of ROH.
